Recompile

[h1] Platformer with plenty of exploration that will not always hold your hand. You have to look around to find THE WAY *knuckles chuckles*. Gameplay is set in dark cybernetic environment where as lone program you have to recompile the E.X.E. process. Gather new power ups as you play allowing for further exploration. Level design allow for a bit of freedom but not too much. Involve in shooting to get rid of corrupted programs, scripts, etc. Overall calm ambience and original idea. Good for single playthrough. Combat is so unenjoyable that I just can't finish it. Spent little over an hour getting to know this game, seems cool on the surface. Enjoyable puzzles and concept. After combat gets introduced you get whiplash from how fast your crosshair is moving, so you adjust it (normal, I guess). Once you're in the first area there's more combat and you quickly realize the enemies are dodgeable ONLY if you're zipping around with your dash ability. Once you're aiming your weapon you're relying on lucky timing between their shots. First area's boss is unbeatable without a cheese as far as I can tell. Not worth finishing.

Very cool story that you have to piece together from the messages and logs, but first let me get some explain what I didn't like about it. The controls are ok, if not for some annoying traversal issues where you could fall through a tiny hole in the ground that is almost invisible and lose progress. The combat is simplistic and there are very few enemies through out that the game feels almost empty. The worst part about Recompile are the falls in some areas, someone forgot to code in a limit where after you fall you can restart, nope in those areas if you fall you can keep falling for like 10 or 15 seconds before you die and restart, I thought that was a baffling decision. Despite the issues, I still recommend the game, I loved the story, aesthetics, music and the atmosphere, it's the closest game I've ever played to TRON, which is my favorite sci-fi movie since childhood. So, to sum up, a good story, aesthetics, music and atmosphere, some annoying design decisions that are not enough to spoil the experience, over all a solid 7/10.
