About Vartio

✦ AI summary

Vartio puts you on a solitary night patrol through dark medieval forests where every sound could spell your doom, armed only with a dim torch and your fraying nerves. This compact psychological horror experience traps you in escalating paranoia as the line between real danger and imagined terrors dissolves into atmospheric dread.

A short psychological horror experience from the creators of Kaamos.Vartio (Finnish for “Patrol”) drops you into the boots of a medieval guardsman assigned to a solitary night watch. Your duty: patrol the shadowy forests surrounding a remote watchtower and report back to your commander. But something is wrong out there. And it’s getting closer.

Patrol the darkness

Step out into the cold woods under cover of night. As a lone sentry on the empire’s edge, your torch is dim, and your instincts are all you can trust.

Paranoia made real

Rely on your ears more than your eyes. Every rustle in the brush, every creak of a branch may spell danger. Are those footsteps? Or just the wind?

Something is watching

The deeper into the forest you go, the more uncertain reality becomes. Blood trails. Whispers. Was that a raider—or something worse?
  • A compact, focused psychological horror experience (~20 minutes).
  • Immersive 3D pixel art with a dark retro aesthetic.
  • Rich atmospheric sound design crafted to heighten tension.
  • Standalone story set in the same unsettling world as Kaamos.
You’re not the only one walking these woods tonight.

✦ AI summary

Vartio impresses players with its strong atmosphere, effective sound design, and compelling psychological horror premise centered around a lone medieval guardsman. However, the core gameplay feels overly linear and restrictive, discouraging exploration and leaving the experience feeling like an incomplete indie project despite its solid artistic foundation. Most players consider it worth experiencing at its low price point, particularly in a dark room, though some feel it needs more substantial mechanics to fully realize its promising concept.

The game concept and artstyle is cool, sound design is at least ok, maybe better than just ok. However, the problem lies in that the game introduces the core that is useless - it's completely linear, or at the very least, feels like so. At some point you just give up on trying to explore anything, because you expect these actions to be useless. Hope one day we would see a proper realization of this game's idea in one form or another. But right now, it feels and plays like a usual itch io bite-sized title. Support the developer tho, it's evident that they could do more - despite having broken core, artstyle and immersion is pretty much on the page, they just need a push or a support to make complete titles I believe.

Vartio is a brief psychological horror experience built around a simple but effective premise: being alone in a place where every sound and shadow can become a potential threat. Developed by Pepperbox Studios and published by indie.io, it casts the player as a medieval guardsman assigned to patrol the wilderness surrounding an isolated watchtower. What begins as an ordinary night watch gradually develops into something far more unsettling as suspicious noises, disturbing discoveries, and increasingly strange events make the player question what is actually waiting beyond the torchlight. The game draws much of its strength from restraint. Instead of relying heavily on combat, complicated puzzles, or relentless enemy encounters, it focuses on exploration and psychological tension. Walking through the forest becomes the central activity, but the darkness surrounding the player ensures that even simple movement carries a degree of anxiety. Visibility is intentionally limited, making distant shapes difficult to identify and encouraging the imagination to turn harmless scenery into possible danger. The feeling of being watched becomes increasingly important, and the game succeeds when t…

Visually deceptive and very unnerving sound design. Very much worth the price.
