The Dark Cave

The Dark Cave, developed by Leaves Games and published by 2P Games, is a compact turn-based roguelite that distills strategy, tension, and resource pressure into a deceptively simple grid-based format. At first glance, it looks like a small retro-inspired dungeon crawler with minimal presentation, but once you begin your descent, it becomes clear that the game’s design is built around razor-sharp decision-making. Every battle takes place on two opposing 3×3 grids—one for your hero and one for the enemy faction—and every action carries weight because movement itself is a limited resource. Where many roguelikes afford players room to experiment, The Dark Cave demands precision from the first encounter, layering tactical restrictions onto an already unforgiving structure. The story is deliberately sparse, letting the combat system and character progression carry the experience. like a Kongregate version of Slay the Spire

The easiest way to describe this game is to compare it to a different indie game by a different developer that came out four years prior: The Dungeon Beneath. The Dungeon Beneath offers a very similar package to The Dark Cave in that they're both turn-based roguelikes where you proceed in a mostly-linear fashion through each floor of an arbitrary dungeon, a bit like Slay the Spire's map except you're only rarely allowed to make a choice about what location you go to next. Unfortunately, The Dungeon Beneath allows you to use multiple party members, has much tighter balance, feels more intuitive to play and control, and is just a much better game overall. So why am I leaving a positive review for The Dark Cave? A couple reasons. The biggest reason is that this game feels like the raw, untamed vision of a single individual or very small group. The balance can get wacky, making you feel both extremely powerful or like you had no chance no matter what you did, but the design decisions are bold and feel deliberate. short but sweet, interesting lil system that's fun to explore for exactly as long as it takes to master it. Love this kind of thing.

Nice little game. Unfinished and unpolished - more like a jam-level than a steam level - but I enjoyed playing it.
