Ace Squared

Was a fun game to play with friends for a while, but right now the game is dead. Last update was in May and the devs have been pretty silent. I hope they add more things in the future to bring more people to the game, but I don't know If It will happen anytime soon. If something changes I may update this review, but until then It will stay negative.

Recommended with Caution. This project may become abandoned and never be finished. I'm glad this attempt at Reviving Ace of Spades has been able to get as far as it has. That being said: I wish it had players or some sort of singleplayer content. One of the all-too-common multiplayer indie games that is effectively "stillborn". Not enough players at launch and will never get enough players overtime for a full server with the exception of gamenights. Most days there is nobody playing so you'll end up just walking around in empty servers just exploring maps and fooling around. Amazingly, this game very faithfully recreates Ace of Spades with all of its particle quirks and voxel mechanics. The issue is that there is nobody to actually play the game with. If development IS continuing; I'd like to see some sort of genuine singleplayer content. Time trial challenges or a shoothouse or bot multiplayer or something to give people a reason to buy the game fully knowing they may never actually get to play with other human beings. Dev, if you are reading this: Keep up the good work. I appreciate all the effort you did for this.

Ace Squared is a free to play arena FPS that feels like it was made for people who miss the old style of block building shooters. I can run around fully destructible maps, build walls and structures, dig tunnels and then use those changes to attack or defend. The basic shooting is simple enough, but the building is what gives it most of its personality. I like being able to change the map during a match instead of treating the environment as something that is completely fixed. The building and destruction work especially well together. I can make cover when I need it, create defensive positions or dig through the ground to get behind an enemy position. I can also destroy structures that are in my way, which means a good defensive setup never feels completely permanent. That gives me more freedom than a normal arena shooter because I am thinking about the battlefield as well as the weapons. It has a nice old school feel to it without trying to make everything overly complicated. The class system adds another useful layer. There are classes such as Commando, Engineer, Sniper and Miner, with each one changing how I approach a match. The Commando gives me heavier firepower, the Engin…

What's unique about Ace Squared is that it seems to emulate the Jagex era of Ace of Spades. If that is your cup of tea, then I believe you will enjoy this game. It's just not my preference. Ultimately, I think you would have a better experience playing the original Ace of Spades via Build and Shoot. Check out the BetterSpades and OpenSpades clients too!

Greatest revival of a game that shouldn't have been gone. The Dev is amazing.
