About Breaking Time

Breaking Time

Breaking Time is a singleplayer first-person speedrun platformer game where the player's goal is to complete the game level in record time, progressing through a world that itself is fractured in time.

In Breaking Time, you race against the clock. Run, jump, grapple, or glide above the clouds atop structures to conquer time. But beware—a fall from great heights can indeed be a long one.

This was the first game I played on the Steam Deck. The purpose of the game is to go as fast as possible which means it can be easy, challenging, or hard for both new and experienced players depending on what you want despite lacking any real difficulty setting. It's free, takes up low storage space, and despite being short, it is an extremely replayable experiance. Although I haven't played it for long yet, I found myself enjoying it more than bigger titles with much better reviews, and enjoyment of a game is what matters most.

This comes across as something unambitious and "simple" in terms of implementation and technical quality and depth, more like a game dev tutorial or an experiment. It’s a classic case of a developer prioritizing the low effort needed to get a game listed on Steam over the actual delivery of a technically sound or compelling product. Whatever is needed to hammer out something "good" enough for Steam Direct self-publishing. The graphics aren't great, minimalist low poly, barely textured placeholder assets. That's understandably a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You deserv…
