Clover's Quadrants

Currently on the last challenge level of the third world and I think I'm at a point where this is an easy recommendation. If you love sokoban, this is a fresh take offering a real challenge, that will firmly lodge its logic in your noodle. It's beautiful, the music is great, and the puzzles are brilliant.

Very solid block-pushing game

[b][i]Clover’s Quadrants[/i][/b] is a maneuvering puzzle game about picking up items that modify your character’s grid-based movement. Each of the four directions is bound to an inventory slot that can be occupied by an item picked up in the course of the level, activating a specific ability when moving in the corresponding direction. The game was expanded from [i]UDLR_Modify[/i], a jam submission published two years earlier; it contains refined mechanics and many more singular puzzles, with the visuals and music also receiving a major overhaul. The puzzles are designed around a compact set of directional abilities. For instance, a common item found in many levels is the orange 2-piece. If you pick it up in your right inventory slot, then every time you move right you’ll actually jump over one tile, landing on the second tile to your right. This can be very useful for jumping across gaps, but it can also lead to softlock situations when you need to reach a tile that’s immediately next to you. Excellent sokoban game that I found to be surprisingly challenging. It's pretty easy to understand the main hook of the game - your four movement directions also serve as inventory slots that can do things like modify movement in that direction or act as a magnet to let you pull objects, for example - but there start to be interesting interactions between everything that really ramp things up. The one tile that took me a little bit to wrap my head ahead is the light blue colored one, which I personally dubbed the 'baby bird' tile since it lets you absorb a tile and then barf it out in a different direction :) I found a lot of the challenge came from some of the solution setups being quite complicated. There were a decent amount of levels where I had a pretty good idea how to solve the level, but couldn't get everything moved into the correct spot to save my life. In that regard, the hint system in this game is brilliant; you can basically get a snapshot of the locations of everything that serves as a stepping stone to the final solution. excellent sokoban game. lots of interesting interactions between the different tiles and plenty of very satisfying aha/epiphany moments whilst finding solutions. i particularly enjoyed the process of sort of 'solving backwards' on some levels, identifying what your final setup would have to be and then trying to work out how to get there. has a really nice difficulty curve and also a nice sense of progression as a couple of the introduced tiles (blue especially!) are initially a bit confounding but eventually become very intuitive to use. additionally, the art is incredible! the backgrounds in each level are each a painting in themselves and the overall presentation is superb. big props to the devs
