Just when you can't tell whether you're at the edge of the desert or its center, you wander into a ghost town. A cart stands at a crossroads, out of place in all respects, but you ain't one to complain on an empty stomach. You stumble up to its window, desperate for something to ease your pain...
Cures & Curios is a virtual reality game for the HTC Vive set in the Weird Old West. In this mystical take on the American frontier, the player toils in an old-fashioned medicine show cart in the center of a small pioneer town called Pueblo Pequeño. Each day, you must concoct a variety of potions for the locals that come to your window. As your potion-making skills grow, so do your options: new recipes, ingredients, tools, and rewards await you. But know that the fruits of your labor belong to the Beast, the mysterious figure that brought you back from the edge of death only to force you into servitude.

Визуальный стиль, выполненный в приятной мультяшной стилистике, радует глаз, а ненавязчивый саундтрек создает расслабляющую атмосферу. Геймплей интуитивно понятен, но при этом предлагает достаточно глубины, чтобы заинтересовать на долгое время. С каждым уровнем рецепты становятся сложнее, а ингредиенты – более редкими, что требует планирования и эффективного использования ресурсов. Отдельно стоит отметить юмор, пронизывающий всю игру. Описания ингредиентов и диалоги с клиентами полны остроумных шуток, что делает процесс исцеления больных не только увлекательным, но и забавным. Несмотря на кажущуюся простоту, игра 'Cures & Curios' способна бросить вызов даже опытному стратегу. Cures & Curios is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. It's from DigiPen. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Sure, it helps their marketing and helps the students feel good about themselves, but this is another case of a business putting themselves before the needs of gamers. This time the students made a VR tech demo, a simple tycoon game where you concoct various potions and elixirs and flog them to rubes in a wild west themed backdrop. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time…
