About The Curious Study of Dr. Blackwood: A VR Tech Demo

Hi, we’re Digital Myths . . . and welcome to our Study.
The Curious Study of Dr. Blackwood is a short, sweet, and simple VR tech demo that shows off our VR skills, as well as gives a sneak peek at our work on our first title, a supernatural adventure game called Project Spectral. Relax in the beautiful virtual space, mess around with weird objects and magical abilities, or dig a little deeper to uncover some insider secrets we’ve left for you to find.

So this is a game demo?
Not exactly! This isn’t a traditional demo in the sense of showing off story or full gameplay – we’re not quite that far along yet! But we have created some pretty awesome stuff that we’re proud of – art, environment, effects, magic system, interactions, and virtual presence – and we wanted to share it as soon as we could. We hope you enjoy this little taste . . . and come back for the more adventurous entrée later!

So if it’s not a game demo, what do I do?
Whatever you like! We created this virtual space for users to experiment with in VR. Pick up items, interact with objects, maybe even try casting a few spells. Keep an eye out for mysterious secrets, or Easter eggs that reveal more about our team and our development. Or just draw a comfy chair up by the fire and relax . . . and try not to worry about that glowering gargoyle in the corner. . .

"The Curious Study of Dr. Blackwood: A VR Tech Demo" is, as the developers blatantly admit, not a full proper game. But they published it anyway, because I guess what's good for the developers ego is much more important than delivering full, high quality games to gamers. Gamers don't matter, only developers? Well, gamers are the ones who write the reviews. And we do care about games that are made to be games for gamers. What do you do in the game? Nothing... really. Because it's barely a game, and is more of a "sandbox" tech demo, all you do is look around and poke around and maybe find a couple of easter eggs. This game looks a lot better visually than the actual gameplay. It could be the developer purchased high-end assets (no proof of that), or somehow managed to create great-looking assets while delivering a mediocre game, in this case it could be either... but there's no hard proof this is an asset flip. But as always, ethics of asset flipping aside (whether this is one or not), what matters is the quality of the game, and this has all the same low qualities that we expect from asset flip shovelware. It's VR exclusive, and that shows the developer failed to unders…

Игра «The Curious Study of Dr. Blackwood: A VR Tech Demo» предлагает захватывающее погружение в виртуальную лабораторию, где игрок исследует загадочные эксперименты.

The idea is good, but it gets slower as you continue to explore the room, causing lagging and after images when moving the hands. The mechanics are good but the movement isn't smooth and kept getting stuck on many places that clearly had enough room to pass. Guess it's good for a free trial, but wouldn't be willing to pay for a game if not fixed the issues mentioned.

Even though this tech demo is quite old now, it's still quite pretty. There isn't a lot to do besides have a nose around and listen to some developer voice clips where they are getting very excited about the possibilities of VR. The interactions haven't aged too badly compared to other older tech demos and experiences but it's definitely just something to put on, look around and then forget about again. It's free and won't take up much of your time so why not, but equally, you aren't missing out on anything mind-blowing if you decide to skip it.
