Despondent

I actually love this game, I was a bit discouraged at first with the lack of hints as to how to beat Bosses, where to go and lack of saves, but as I figured it out I began really enjoying the challenge. The graphics are great, I was getting over 100 fps in 4k, real voice acting that is good, a body you can see, you can jump, crouch and prone and imagine this, a flashlight that doesn't need batteries. It's super creepy and kinda reminds me of a game I loved called LEMPO. Yeah it's hard, has a few bugs but the dev has a fix for most problems like, lack of save and some glitches. I originally played this game the week it came out but one thing made me mad more than anything else and that was the horrible checkpoints in the game. The dev did make it a bit better with updates but its still not the best as if you die in the one area where you get in the back of a truck mowing dudes down with a machine gun you get sent back into the facility all the way to the beginning (its still like this in October 2025 btw). Holy ♥♥♥♥ dev please playtest your game before you release it. I raged quit the game that August then came back in October to beat it lol. Only reason I didn't abandon the game entirely was that it was interesting and was nicely designed beyond that. Definitely a somewhat middle tier of indie game quality as some areas were lacking in detail and plain but there was some effort put into the game. This game isn't that bad beyond the horrible checkpoints but at the same time I wouldn't expect very high quality of it if you do buy it. This game is what Indie Development is all about. 1 person who came together with the entire concept with inspiration from other classic survival horrors. For how poor the AAA market is at the moment, these are the sort of projects we should be supporting now more than ever. Game-play is solid, and almost has a speed-run type vibe to it for when you finish it the first time around... seems like the perfect game for a small community to gather round and try and beat the game as quick as possible. that being said, the story itself is actually very compelling and engaging and ticks all the boxes you would expect from a AAA studio, and again its done here all by 1 person with the help of some convincing voice acting performances across the board. seen some reviews from earlier in the piece, but with the additional patches since then, it seems like a lot of the performance related issues and a few checkpoints that were too far spread, have all been taken on board & fixed by the dev. Despondent is a very compelling game that treats you to an intriguing story and emotional dialogue. I was impressed with the game as it stands but adding on the fact that it was ultimately created and is updated by a single developer makes the game truly something special. Games are always going to have glitches and Despondent is no different, but it's a game that possesses soul unlike a lot of other games equipped with vastly more resources and time. I'm a big fan of the details scattered around the game that shows how the developer cares about the player experience. It's obvious to me how much effort they invested into not only the objectives, story and characters, but the elements of the game that often go unseen. Examples of this include Sed's shoes getting bloody when walking through grotesque environments, a lake setting that serves as icing on top for the journal entries, and conditional dialogue depending on the choices you make in game. Leave an area before the enemy isn't finished talking or completely disregard the wishes of an NPC, they will let you know how it affects them. I really enjoyed this game, very nostalgic of early console horror games with a cool storytelling mechanic. Having not only the game and characters around you but also the journal updating to give deeper context was great to help stay immersed in the game. I also spent quite a while just wandering around enjoying all the fun easter eggs and references I could find (I ended up spending around 8 hours on a single playthrough). Honestly, the fact that a single person made this blows my mind and you can see the hard work they put into this project. I will be playing it through again to see if I missed anything and would definitely suggest playing this to my friends. Keep up the amazing work!
