About Éalú
Éalú is an award winning, 2 to 4 hour long, meditative experience, depending on how deeply you explore the maze, focused on physical craft and reflection - made by a small, independent team of artists. It's best defined as a highly interactive, silent film set to a gorgeous instrumental score.------------------------------In a cozy, quiet nest at the heart of a stone-and-wood labyrinth, a clockwork mouse sleeps — and dreams of the outside world. When it awakens, the only way forward is through. To escape, the mouse must rely on clever thinking, keen senses, and hope — despite past failures. The maze is filled with locked doors, cryptic puzzles, and lurking dangers. But maybe, this time, freedom is possible.

"It's a lovely-looking thing - a 'true stop-motion game' "PC Gamer's Ted Litchfield wrote, on previewing Éalú, that it's "...Somewhat unsettling, like a cross between Myst and Wallace and Gromit—cozy, but also lonely, with flashes of something sinister here and there.""...I think Beyond the Bark is cooking with a really special, singular atmosphere."Heybox / 不羁猫探索队 scored Éalú 4/4 and remarked "The strongest thematic unity of any indie I played this season… its handcrafted stop-motion quality simply cannot be replicated in 3D."
Éalú is true, old-school stop-motion. Every animation was captured via photography frame-by-frame using real sets, hand-crafted props, and a physical wooden mouse. Over 512 video clips were painstakingly made by a single animator — mostly in a garden shed — and brought to life in Unity by one developer carefully ensuring that each movement flowed into the next.
All of the music was composed and recorded specifically for this artistic work by a single composer, and every illustration was drawn by hand.Éalú was made with no budget & no crowdfunding. Just 4 people passionate about the project:

- Eat cheese!
- Discover the secrets of the maze — and the story hidden beneath it.
Background
Éalú is a spiritual sequel to "Tomcat Disposables" by Will Wood. If you're keen to know more, said short film can be seen by searching for Tomcat Disposables on YouTube, & gives backstory for our beloved mouse. The themes which inspired our game & its mechanics center on the confusing, sometimes destructive nature of algorithm driven behavioral loops, & the potential to be drawn in by or escape them.An Artistic Experience Lovingly Made by a Tiny Team
As mentioned at the top, based on playtests we anticipate that, for most players, Éalú will be a focused 2 to 4 hour long experience. We put a lot of thought, time & care into our wordless story & it's themes which are expressed in tandem with phenomenal music, all with a goal of creating the ability to control a character in a gorgeous silent film.Éalú is true, old-school stop-motion. Developed by Beyond the Bark and published by Beyond the Bark, Éalú is a handcrafted point-and-click puzzle adventure that stands apart from most modern indie releases through its unwavering commitment to physical artistry and atmosphere. Rather than relying on flashy mechanics or lengthy storytelling, it presents a compact, wordless journey that can be completed in roughly two to four hours, placing its focus on emotional resonance, environmental exploration, and carefully constructed puzzles. Every aspect of the game reflects the passion of a tiny independent team that chose craftsmanship over spectacle, resulting in an experience that feels closer to an interactive stop-motion film than a conventional video game. The premise follows a small wooden clockwork mouse that awakens in the center of a sprawling stone-and-wood labyrinth after dreaming of the world beyond its confines. From that simple beginning, players are tasked with navigating increasingly intricate environments filled with locked doors, hidden pathways, environmental puzzles, and mysterious dangers. The narrative unfolds entirely through visual storytelling, encouraging players to interpret the symbolism and discov…4 found this helpful
Stylish, but that's about all it has going for it. Literally every other part of the game is working against it. The music is dull and repetitive. The stop-motion animation, initially appealing, makes gameplay clunky every step of the way. The controls are not super responsive either, meaning you're constantly waiting to see if an action triggered after you click. Also, something I didn't expect are the random deaths that reset the game state, meaning you'll have to redo puzzles you've already solved, meaning backtracking through rooms you've already been through. And that's the other major issue. The environments are just dull as hell. I appreciate what they did to create the game, but everything went into designing the physical objects, and very little into making a game that is actually fun to play.4 found this helpful

peak 9.5/10 animations slow but its okay i forgive you cause its PEAK would play entire thing again WILL play entire thing again3 found this helpful
If you really dont mind super slow not very challenging puzzle games, go for it, otherwise just go look up Will Woods on youtube and watch his videos/listen to his music, which are very good. Love the stop motion and the music but holy cow is it sluggish, every mouse (!!!) button locks you into animations that last seconds, puzzles dont stay solved between deaths meaning a puzzle that took you a few minutes to slog through will have to be re-redone every cycle.1 found this helpful
Absolutely adorable, very fun, and perfect for dusting off your old gaming notebook <3 if you've ever wanted to play The Neverhood, with less obtuse puzzles and zero reading; look no further. You've found your game. Welcome home. <3
