About Gerrymap

In Gerrymap you practice gerrymandering: drawing maps to decide the outcome of elections. A state has four districts. In most elections, its vote is split equally. Each party should have two districts, right?NO! If we control redistricting, we pack the enemy party into just one district! This is the art of gerrymandering.

It's not always so simple. A "dummymander" could give away all your seats in a bad election year. An overly conservative map could make further gains difficult. Also, some areas are very elastic, others are not!

The VRA says you have to create majority-minority districts in some states. As you play on the Democratic side in the campaign, this will force you to pack your voters! And expect to draw a lot of squiggly lines.

Featuring:
  • A campaign mode with 10 states! Deal with the challenges Southern Democrats faced gerrymandering in 1990.
  • A sandbox mode with all 48 contiguous US states! 1976-2000 Presidential, Senate and Gubernatorial results for each state. Play around with it!
  • 1990 census data: Race, sex, age, household income, and educational attainment!

I recommend the game since let's be real, there's nothing else like it, if you're interested chances are you'll like it. However, I think the lackluster UI and tools to work it makes the game in many ways an un-strategic chore to get through. - Many states have an objective which is "craft a district that democrats win in 1992 but that swings hard for republicans in 1994". Obviously it follows that the optimal district is one made out of a lot of swingy countries. However, there's no swinginess mapmode. This means that the strategy for crafting these districts is either hoping you're able to glance which are they switching between the 1992 and 1994 mapmodes, or deadass basically start making spreadsheets yourself. - Similar thing with black majority districts. the optimal black majority district is one that is uncharacteristically republican in comparison to how black it is. You would want to have the average racial makeup and political allegiance of the state, and then have a mapmode showing for each county how much its politics diverge from the one it would mathematically predict based on just the county's race, the state's race and the state's politics. Again there isn't, you'…

I love the idea but it is very difficult, even as someone who has been redistricting recreationally for awhile. There are a few features that would be nice: 1. Multiple difficulty levels in campaign mode 2. Adjustable numbers of districts in sandbox mode 3. State legislature maps in campaign mode 4. Be able to view race/partisan data at the same time, flipping between the two is time-consuming, especially when you're balancing the two factors Still, its definitely worth the $10, I've had a fun time with it. EDIT: I misunderstood the Alabama prompt, I thought it was asking for 1 plurality black district AND one separate majority black district. I was able to draw those districts but not get the 1994 required districts as well. When dropped down to just drawing one majority black district, which of course is also plurality black, it immediately became much easier and I blasted on right through to Texas. I don't now think the difficulty needs to be adjusted, its about right, though maybe make the VRA requirements a bit more clear. I'd also add, its a bit weird to be drawing so many close districts, when to be more realistic you'd be drawing at least D+10 districts, but I digress.
