Length -Approx. 2 - 3 hours longController support : Xbox & PS4 Visual options - Contrast, Brightness and Saturation levelsSteam deck: playable (Not verified)Development team : Made by a solo developer, Jamie DSTORYBefore the old times, ancient gods once held the eternal responsibility of sending the good to heaven and the wicked to hell. After growing tired of everlasting life and having grown older than time itself, the gods built a gigantic monolithic machine.
This titan of a device was to take on their endless burden of soul sorting and allow them to die.
This "Hellscreen" machine was soon constructed. But there was no rejoicing, only relief. In a flash, the old gods were gone, lost to time.
After millennia of sorting countless souls, the machine begins to malfunction and displaces you.
You are taken from the real world at the point of your death and deposited in the Hellscreen realm, instead of the peaceful afterlife you deserve.
You are given an inhuman form and are called upon to destroy the machine and its infernal biome.
It must be stopped from dismantling the fabric of all existence and destroying all reality and only you can stop it and reset order.
Once this is done then perhaps you can return to your eternal resting spot.

janky, unrefined and disgustingly overpriced. in 20 minutes of gameplay, I've had unclear direction, lack of explanation of controls, 100% invisible and seemingly invincible enemies that kill you, and a headache from the boring and nauseating color palette. Don't buy this2 found this helpful
Very interesting game but ultimately not for me.1 found this helpful
Forced out of early access in an unfinished state. It had potential and a promise for more levels but all future plans seem to be canceled. There's just not enough content to justify the price tag. wait for a sale.1 found this helpful
Hellscreen, developed by Jamie D and published under the Mixtape Games UK label, is an ambitious, stylistically bold first-person shooter that merges old-school FPS design with a highly distinctive gameplay twist. At first glance, it fits comfortably into the “boomer shooter” subgenre—games inspired by the fast-paced, run-and-gun mechanics of early '90s shooters like Doom or Quake. But Hellscreen immediately sets itself apart with a core mechanic that fundamentally alters how players approach combat: a real-time rear-view mirror that allows you to see—and shoot—what's happening behind you. This innovation is more than a gimmick; it's an integral part of the game's rhythm and tension, making awareness and positioning essential in ways not often seen in first-person shooters. From the moment you enter Hellscreen's bleak, surreal world, it’s clear this is a game with a strong visual and atmospheric identity. The art direction leans heavily on brutalism, industrial sci-fi, and body horror, evoking influences from H.R. Giger and the darker corners of retro gaming history. The environments are made up of stark geometric architecture, abstract mechanical forms, and oppressive lighting th…1 found this helpful
I was very excited for this game and I adore the art style, but the main gimmick just feels like a pain to work around for not much reward (I get x2 damage by moving forward but only x4 damage by moving forward and shooting behind me while fighting reversed controls). The game is also pretty poorly optimized, it drops frames badly when theres explosions on screen. That being said, the gunplay is still great and feels like an evolved take on classic Doom thanks to the animations and hitscan, the high-contrast colors make it easy to see enemies at any distance, and it's really cool how they incorporate the weapons into the level progression and obstacles.
Fun concept, mid execution (probaly hasnt been able to see it in its fullest thanks to the data not saving), not the best map design at all (confusing me at every turn everywhere) and bad tutorial, very excited to see this game be completed, and im hyped to see how much the game changed from their where I feel like its underbaked.
