Hide & Spook: The Haunted Alchemist is an unusual virtual reality party game that makes clever use of asymmetric multiplayer. Rather than placing every participant inside a headset, it builds its entire concept around three people sharing the same physical play area. One player becomes the Alchemist and wears the VR headset, while two others assume the roles of Ghosts and use tracked motion controllers. Developed by Murray Lorden and published by MUZBOZ Games, it is a small-scale experience with a very specific purpose, but its creative approach to local VR multiplayer helps it stand apart from more conventional virtual reality games. The central competition is easy to understand. The Alchemist observes the haunted laboratory through the headset and attempts to locate the two Ghost players. Meanwhile, the Ghosts physically move around the available play space and try to extinguish candles before they are discovered. Controller vibrations help the Ghosts locate their objectives without requiring them to look at another display. This creates an interesting form of physical hide-and-seek where movement, timing, awareness, and deception become more important than complicated controls.…
