Ilum

Review written after reaching the end of the game. Ilum is a tough sell, I like the game a lot but its definitely hard to call a good video game. The main appeal of the game is definitely the scale and detail of the world. It is very clearly apparent that a ton of passion and research went into constructing the game world and it makes exploring the world an absolute joy. The first time I climbed a ziggurat and looked out at the landscape was a genuinely emotional experience to me and made me realize that this was a game I could genuinely enjoy. It's especially cool given how underrepresented this setting is in the whole of gaming. You have thousands of Greeces and Egypts out there but very few Babylons, so seeing this world constructed with such detail and passion is really special. The game itself is very repetitive. Progression in the game revolves around doing a very limited set of quests over and over again until you reach 100 quests complete. Some of these quests can be unreasonably difficult and can definitely be very frustrating if you aren't willing to put up with janky mechanics. Another reviewer said it best when they said Ilum is a hard sell. I recommend it as a thing to look at and walk around in for a weird sense of open world with various little oddities that can be janky but fun, but not so much as a game for everyone. First, let’s talk about the graphics since that will be the first thing that may be a dealbreaker for some people. If you don’t like what you see in the trailer, the game itself in motion doesn’t really change much from that. Sure, you get used to it, but they’re just not very good unfortunately. Oh, and the graphics can look even worse depending on the “weather” you choose, which basically puts a filter on the entire world. What’s that? You just won’t use weather? Well, unfortunately, weather is tied to your attack power so you may not really have much choice. If you can look past the graphics, then the game has a pretty neat open world version of ancient Babylon, apparently based on archaeological finds and all sorts of cool things like that. HOLY PEAK!!! Ilum is great and I love it. Like the other two guys said, Ilum is very much a hard sell. It's very detailed and a lot of passion went into it, but the clunky controls and lack of diversity do lessen the experience. It is definitely worth the ten dollars personally, but if running around for 20 minutes to get anywhere sounds horrible (solid 40% of the game), then maybe look elsewhere. It has a lot of cool features, like the Akkadian dialogue and the cuneiform syllables, but certainly is not for everyone. Overall 10/10 ILUM ILUM ILUM.

A very realistic, historically accurate experience. My fondest memory playing Ilum has gotta be when I first heard a child cry; I thought to myself: can I make it stop? So I went looking for the kid, the voices led me to the nearest house and inside was the child. I did it. I struck it. A gigantic hand appeared out of nowhere, grabbed the body, flew away and disappeared in the ceiling. You can do what Anakin did to younglings in this game. ILUM/10.
