Kokoro Clover is an ongoing and ever-evolving passion project by solo developer hikotel which aims to recreate the feeling of watching an early-2000's Sunday morning cartoon in Japan. To immediately address the elephant in the room: The gameplay is... Honestly terrible (and terribly easy), and plagued with the kind of unpolished jank you can typically expect from games developed using Pixel Game Maker MV. But the gameplay isn't the focus of this project to the point that it doesn't matter at all and really isn't even worth talking about. Rather, the appeal is entirely in its excellent presentation, charming characters, and unashamedly clichéd story. All elements working in tandem to faithfully reproduce and indulge in the well-worn tropes and clichés typical of children's anime from that era. It's far more of a visual novel with occasional short platforming stages and boss fights, all of which are a cakewalk. This isn't a dealbreaker for me, but it might be a turn-off for those who go into this game expecting a challenging action-platformer. You won't be playing Kokoro Clover for its gameplay. Rather, you'll be in it entirely for the enjoyment of experiencing a chee…

RRRRAAAAHHHHHHHH I NEED SEASON 2!!! THIS GAME IS SO CUTE AND CHARMING!!! The game is pretty much exactly what it says on the description, this game brings youth to my soul, it's so simple and sweet, I need more of it. Like many other people say, yeah the gameplay is not a strong point whatsoever, but you're playing this game more like an action visual novel than anything, and that's absolutely fine. Adorable art style, funny characters, BANGER CHIPTUNE OST OH YEAH!!!

very cute, fun, witty little game that's mostly about the art and story, gameplay mostly being a mini-game that happens between story sequences. the main accomplishment of the gameplay is how it functions as an activity for building the characters and their iconic abilities, which is fine. definitely do not expect a game focused on challenging encounters, it is trivially easy to beat this game, but you will beat it dancing and transforming and being cheered on by cute characters. i hope momo accomplishes her gay little dreams

edit: after finishing this, I love it and I detest the lack of a season 2! Playing one episode a day, it really recreates the feeling of watching a show like this as a kid. It's like a fun kids' anime, at least so far. The writing and especially the localisation are surprisingly good - I get a 90s RPG translation vibe, fairly close to something Working Designs would put out, minus the 'excess creativity'. The gameplay is a bit thin - I think it's fine if they just wanted to include only light gameplay as an analogue for the action scenes you'd get in an anime like this, without the friction that mechanically complex or challenging gameplay might entail, but I think they could at least give the character physics; as is, the character kind of slides along and it feels disconnected. That's not the focus though, so it doesn't matter too much. Also, if you're a Japanese learner, this game simultaneously displays the Japanese text and localised text, and the game uses kana predominantly, so it might be good for learning depending on your level. The vocabulary isn't particularly difficult, either.
