Important Notes on Controllers
When you connect a controller, it is now detected automatically whether you are using an XInput Controller or a Direct Input controller. However, there are still some drawbacks if using a Direct Input controller.
Which would be:
Mapping might be unreliable.
Some Direct Input controllers cut in and out creating a “stuttering effect” with the player movement.
Direct Input controllers do not rumble when used without external software (Use external software at your own risk.).
What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Players have sharply divided opinions on this shoot 'em up. Supporters appreciate its retro Galaga-style gameplay, humor, simple story, and free price point, with some praising the developers' indie efforts. Critics overwhelmingly pan the game for poor pixel art quality, numerous broken features including non-functional achievements, technical issues and crashes, and fundamentally flawed shoot 'em up mechanics that don't compare to similar titles, with additional complaints about the developer's alleged use of copyright strikes against reviewers.
[strike]Game keeps crashing always after starting a game and cannot create discussions so heres a review[/strike] Apparently fixed now so thanks dev ERROR in action number 1 of Step Event0 for obect par_power_up: Cannot compare unset variables gml_Object_par_power_up_Step_0 (line 13)7 found this helpful
"Kowi Ishto: Battle of Akonoli" is a laughably bad, amateurish attempt at a shoot 'em up, with pixel graphics so bad they don't even look authentic. This is incredibly incompetent. It is unfun to play, barely works, and looks hideous. Items like achievements and so on are also broken. There are reliable accounts of the developers trying to use copyright strikes and DMCA takedowns to silence valid criticism of this non-free software. This feels like a tech demo or a project smacked together to make a minimum viable product to pass the developer's idea and shove it into Steam Direct to see if you can publish junk through Steam Direct. They can, but is it good for gamers? No. This features poor pixel art instead of real graphics. This looks much worse than other games because of that decision, which is a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. This game is five years old, and back then it looked old and busted compared to professional 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then and looks worse now. It was made with "GameMaker Studio," a toolset popular among amateurs because it helps you…1 found this helpful
Hilariously bad. Nothing here works how it should work in a shmup. Even euro shmups are much better. And the achievements don't even work. Don't waste your time with this! Edit 01/28/2026 To the dev: As I said, it's hilariously bad. Which basically means: if you obviously don't want to do the work, I'm not going to do it either! And if you want to know what a well-made top-down shmup looks like, just take a look at this: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2088520/Shooting_Game_KARI/ It's free, too!
A nice and simple retro game that has Galaga vibes, that's always a plus! it has humor to it which is nice, a simple story don't have to have one that's overly complicated. not sure why some people are giving bad reviews (guess some people just gotta gripe about something) typical now-a-days it also has multiplayer, only adding to the fun in a retro revisit of a by gone era. plus it's now free! so now there's nothing holding you or me back! I prefer to support inde developers over the out of touch AAA developers 10/10 Will play again
Before I played Kowi Ishto: Battle of Akonoli, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
