Named one of “The Greatest Games of All Time” by GameSpot, Lode Runner was created by Douglas E. Smith in 1983 while a student at the University of Washington. The game was not only an award-winning bestseller, but also a significant milestone that influenced many in the video game industry.

Alexey Pajitnov, creator of Tetris, said of the game, “My favorite for many, many years. Every level was a real puzzle with its own mechanics, its own dynamics, its own kind of solution. … I can’t imagine any other game with such inventive and unusual design.”

In a tribute to Smith after his death in 2014, US Gamer editor-in-chief Jeremy Parish commented, “\ created one of the most innovative formative works of the medium, a game that managed to transcend international boundaries and become a beloved classic among American PC gamers and Japanese console fanatics alike.”

As a classic from video game history looks to the future, “Lode Runner Legacy” can keep evolving with your support. We hope you enjoy the game!

✦ AI summary

Players appreciate that Lode Runner Legacy faithfully captures the timeless puzzle-action design of the 1983 original with solid presentation and good value, praising its enduring gameplay that still holds up today. However, some veterans of the original game find the remake disappointing, citing faster gameplay pace, oversensitive controls that cause the character to overshoot, and lack of modern display options like 4K support, making it feel like a different experience from what they remember rather than a true recreation.

I played the original back in the day so finding this was a joy. Unfortunately, it's NOT the game I remember hardly at all. It's much faster. Not just the pace of the game but the controls. It's actually difficult to make Loderunner do what I want him to do, he constantly overshoots. The game also runs at relatively low resolution and has no option or support for 4k. For the price I'm not angry, just sad that the game I played in 1983 isn't here for me to play again.

You would not even be looking at this page if you were not already familiar with lode runner. This is an ancient, niche puzzle/action game. It's a great presentation of Lode Runner with a lot to do. Solid game. Great value. Runs well.

Lode Runner Legacy successfully revives one of the most iconic puzzle-platform franchises by modernizing its presentation while preserving the strategic gameplay that made the original a classic. Developed by O-TWO Inc. and Tozai Games, Inc., and published by Tozai Games, Inc., this installment delivers a polished interpretation of the timeless formula instead of attempting to drastically reinvent it. Every stage captures the careful balance between puzzle-solving and action, making the experience appealing to nostalgic fans while remaining approachable for players discovering the series for the first time. The gameplay centers on collecting every piece of gold scattered throughout each stage before reaching the exit, all while avoiding relentless robotic enemies that constantly patrol the environment. Rather than relying on direct combat, players must outsmart their pursuers by digging temporary holes to trap them, creating opportunities to continue exploring or safely escape. This simple mechanic generates remarkable depth because every action has consequences. Digging in the wrong place or hesitating for a moment can quickly trap the player instead of the enemy, encouraging tho…
