About Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow

"When he morphs into a Ninja, You'd better Duck.

• Play as Maui. Play as the Ninja. Play as Maui. Play as the Ninja. Try not to get dizzy.
• Find the missing Shabuhm Shabuhm idol before your island paradise goes kaboom, kaboom.
• Hours and hours of intense gameplay, so pack plenty of attitude. And your big gun.
• Come beak to beak with Muddrakes, Rotting Pirates, Duck Zombies, Amazon Warriors, and a bunch of fowl-tempered hangers on.
• Laugh in the face of danger across 23 stages from the top of a volcano, the bottom of the sea, the Realm of the Dead, and the Ninja Training Grounds. Then get the heck out.
• Live every level like it's your last. 'Cuz it may be."

I WANTED to like this game. I really, really did. I had a LOT of fond memories of playing this on my SNES. The music, the colorful characters, the concept...all of it was solid. But of the versions that they could have chosen to port, they chose the Genesis version. The version where Maui Mallard's basic shots DON'T cover the full screen. The version with a ticking timer for ninja mode. The version with EXTREMELY finicky timing and precision for the ninja swings. I literally couldn't get past the second portion of the second stage...because I kept falling down...because I was TRYING to jump at the apex of a swing forward, only to end up turning around at the last second. And when there's a pit of spikes waiting for you, you cannot AFFORD to have finicky timing and precision for your "swinging mode" portions. And that's WITHOUT taking the unfair hit detection of enemy attacks vs Maui Mallard's ninja mode's strikes. Oh, and did I leave out the part where they DON'T BOTHER TELLING YOU what buttons on your controller equate to which button numbers in the option menu? Because they DON'T. I had to reset the game over and over and OVER until I figured out what configuration of buttons …

The game of my childhood. I wish they would do an HD version of the game as this port can be quite an eye sore on modern hardware. It still plays great though and is still a great hidden gem that is a must play for anyone who enjoys a fun platformer with 90's Saturday morning cartoon vibes.

Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow, developed by Disney Interactive Studios and published by Disney, is a distinctive 2D action platformer that originally emerged during the height of the 16-bit era and has since found renewed life on modern digital storefronts like Steam. While it shares surface similarities with other licensed platformers of the 1990s, the game quickly establishes its own identity through an unusual tonal blend of tropical adventure, noir detective flair, and martial arts mysticism. The result is a title that feels both quintessentially retro and surprisingly experimental for its time. The story follows Maui Mallard, a laid-back private investigator summoned to recover a stolen sacred idol known as the Shabuhm Shabuhm. What begins as a colorful island mystery gradually expands into a far stranger journey filled with enchanted temples, ghostly adversaries, and looming volcanic threats. The narrative leans into pulpy adventure tropes, but it also introduces darker undertones than one might expect from a Disney property. As the stakes escalate, Maui adopts his alternate persona, Cold Shadow—a silent ninja warrior trained in ancient arts. This dual identity is not merely c…
