The core of the game is a generic platformer, but it is layered with a combat and health system that make it much less fun than it could have been. Fall damage is generally nonexistent in platformers, but for whatever reason, it makes an appearance in Max Stern. The combat system involves you shooting skeletons, but they also have weapons to fire back at you. In open areas, combat is easy and boring, but in enclosed rooms you are almost guaranteed to get hit once. This, when combined with fall damage, makes the game mostly about finding health. There is no health regeneration, so you need to find small amounts of 10 or 20 health, but a fall is 20 health on its own. It has a minor plot to it, but it's pretty weak and isn't really the focus of the game. The puzzles are pretty simplistic and uninteresting. Max Stern is a story driven platformer with a brief but intricate plot, referring to a sequence of events, which happened in alternative history in the mid-19th century. While Victorian England just began harvesting the successful results or Her Vaporous Majesty reign, on the outskirts of the great empire there took place some events, completely ignored by the wider society. Believe or not, the wandering island with thick jungle and tumble-down buildings, swarming with armed skeletons, is not a proper place to be. Don’t panic! As a battle-seasoned smuggler, you’ll clear the way through all the obstacles to your airship. One day, as Max, a former officer of Her Vaporous Majesty, transported contraband cargo of ammunition, his airship was knocked out over a mysterious tropical island. The force of impact threw Max out of the airship, while it kept moving on automatic pilot and finally fell to the ground at the other end of the island. When Max came to himself in the jungle, he decided to move through the thicket to find his airship or at least its debris. At that moment he didn’t even imagine the hell, he would go through… Find out the destiny of Spanish colonists and native Indians…

Max Stern is a 2D retro platformer/shooter with puzzle elements built with the clunky Construct 2 engine. Guide "Max Stern", some kind of gnome or something, across an island to defeat his enemies etc. Construct 2 really is a terrible game engine. There's no working full screen mode here, controls can't be customised. In a lot of places the controls don't work. I had to press "W" about three times to climb up a ladder. Badly made games are an exercise in frustration. The only saving grace here is that the artwork is pretty good, but that doesn't save a bad game. Also, $7.50 is way too high a price for a platformer. Note: My high playtime here is caused by a faulty trading card idler.
