Milanesería

Despite its peculiar visual style, which might be off-putting for some, [i]Milanesería[/i] turns out to be quite a fun little game. At its core, it’s a fast-food simulator, albeit a very simple one. You prepare dishes for customers and serve them at the counter, but you only have four recipes to work with, each requiring just a few straightforward steps. Fry some raw flatbreads, assemble hot-dog chorizos, dip a meat cutlet in egg and breadcrumbs before pan-frying it into a Milanesa (something that you might recognize to be a schnitzel) and top that Milanesa with tomato sauce and cheese for the final dish. Customers are very generous, and serving only three or four a day is usually enough to turn a profit. Ingredients are cheap, and ordering them spawns them directly in your kitchen, with no need for unpacking or storage. There’s no time pressure, no penalty for ignoring customers (you can even kick them out without consequence), and each day ends naturally after a few minutes. As a result, the food-serving mechanics feel more like an “excuse” for the game’s fun part: its story. Every day, something unexpected happens, and these random things are the ones that push the narrative …

If you haven’t tried a milanesa you’re in for a treat. If you haven’t played Milaneseria then you can make that treat yourself. Otherwise known as “schnitzel” or milanese (depending on how European or specific you wanna be) this classic of Argentinian cuisine makes itself the star in this new cooking game about serving a bunch of cookie monster men speaking in the local country’s slang. There’s first person interactivity much like in a simulator with a few bonus dishes, twists and a story which may or may not go how you’d expect it to be depending on how high you are at the time of playing it. It controls fairly well, runs smoothly and aside from very minor visual glitches or hitbox snapping that may make you deliver the wrong dish by accident, the gameplay makes it quite easy to pick if you know what you’re doing. It divides itself into both money management and delivery though the former is fairly lenient in your savings unless you really screw up. In contrast, you’ll have your quick memory tested in the latter with the ingredients order until you get the hang of it.
