The year is 1482.
The age of exploration and enlightenment is on the distant horizon and the Renaissance is in full swing across Europe; but in England, the War of the Roses is in its final throes. Change is coming, but in one little convent in the north of the kingdom, everyone has seemed blissfully unaware.
Everyone except Sister Catherine, a beloved nun and firebrand thinker who has just been murdered. In an isolated monastery with an already mysterious reputation, any one of the Sisters could be the killer—and Mother Superior is as stumped as anyone else. That's where you come in.
As an Anchoress, you took an oath to never leave your cell; to devote yourself entirely to God and provide spiritual support to all who came to your door. But as the only Sister who couldn't possibly have committed the crime, you have a new mission: solve the case, before the bishop shutters the convent and the killer goes unpunished.
The Superior hasn't told everyone why you've suddenly joined the regular congregation, but something tells you most of these women know exactly what's going on. Who can you trust? Who is being honest, and who has their guard up—and why? Is the convent really haunted? Who killed Sister Catherine? And worst of all... are you next?

Misericorde is a phenomenal visual novel that instantly feels like a modern classic. The character portraits are so expressive, the prose so sharp, and the music so gripping that you'll be hard pressed not to inhale the whole thing in one go. It's such a rare treat in this day and age to experience a work made by someone who is clearly widely read and thoughtful, who trusts the reader to draw their own conclusions and sit with character contradictions. This is a matter of taste to some extent, but if you're holding off because this is Volume 1 I would recommend going for it anyway. Xeecee has been very transparent about development of Volume 3 and the fact that Volume 3 is to be the last in the series (I know many fiction authors who could learn from this approach lol) so you won't be kept waiting for the conclusion forever.
I will say firstly that I am easily entranced by a good story, but it is not often that I am... enthralled by the events unfolded in one, that I ruminate over every little passage. Misericorde is fantastically written. The synopsis of its story alone is enough to have my mind wondering so fast and so far that I would not dare forget to read it. I don't want to spoil anything not one bit of it. I highly suggest that you go into this work completely ignorant, and use only the information that the VN gives you. No outside sources. There is a lot I could say, but I will spare you my words. Enjoy the read!
Misericorde: Volume One, developed and published by XEECEE, is a historical mystery visual novel that immediately distinguishes itself through its unusual setting and deliberate storytelling. Taking place in a 15th-century English convent, the game invites players into a world defined by faith, hierarchy, and isolation. The murder of Sister Catherine serves as the catalyst for the narrative, but the investigation quickly becomes about much more than identifying a killer. It is a story about the women who inhabit this enclosed world, the burdens they carry, and the secrets they have spent years concealing from one another. The decision to place players in the role of an anchoress is particularly inspired. After living in seclusion for years, the protagonist is reluctantly drawn into the affairs of the convent following the death of one of its members. This perspective creates a compelling dynamic throughout the game. She is simultaneously an outsider and an insider, familiar with the people around her yet disconnected from the daily lives they have led in her absence. The result is an investigation that feels deeply personal, with every conversation revealing new layers of tension …
