Mob Trader is a highly unconventional collecting experience that strips away most of the mechanics associated with traditional games and concentrates almost entirely on obtaining, storing, and trading virtual creatures. Developed and published by Hex, it is best approached as an idle collection experiment built around the Steam inventory system rather than as a conventional creature-catching adventure. There is little emphasis on combat, exploration, storytelling, or mechanical mastery. Instead, the attraction comes from waiting for drops, discovering their rarity, expanding a collection, and potentially trading those items with other players. The core loop is remarkably simple. While the application is running, players can receive a mob after the required period of activity, with the main reward cycle operating around an hourly drop. This makes progression intentionally passive. You are not expected to complete complicated quests or repeatedly fight enemies to earn creatures. Mob Trader is one of those really simple games that I can understand almost immediately. The whole idea is that I poke a dungeon and then wait for it to give me a mob. Every 60 minutes I can receive another mob as a Steam item, with different creatures having different rarities. From there I can build up my collection and trade the items through the Steam Market. There is not really a traditional game here, and I think that is important to understand before I judge it. It is much closer to an idle collectathon built around Steam inventory items. The collecting part is probably what I find most enjoyable. There are common, rare and mythical mobs, with the standard drop chances heavily favouring common creatures. I like the little creature designs and the fact that each mob has its own journal entry. Finding another creature and seeing what it is gives me a small reason to check back later. There are also weekly rotating active drops, so the available mobs change over time instead of giving me exactly the same selection forever. That gives the collection a little more movement. it's a game where you open the app and do nothing, then you get achievements out of it... so no complaints on my end, I like it.
