Neon Aileron

Neon Aileron is a fun shoot 'em up sidescroller with an armed flying ship. The game comes with 7 challenging levels and on each level a more challenging boss. The bosses have parts which you have to destroy, you don't need to destroy all parts in order to destroy the part that destroys the boss, but if you destroy all parts then you get more points. Gameplay is also a bit fast paced which is good for these kind of games. Another good part of the game is that it supports local co-op or remote play together on steam. The game also includes 5 different weapons and a super weapon. My personal favorite weapon was the thunderstrike. Maybe too easy. The local co-op mode is a good way to introduce your gf/wife/grandma/dog to playing a shmups. Boss fights, different stages, power-ups, even one stage that disables your guns and forces you to kill your enemies by crashing into them. You can finish the game on normal difficulty in 30 minutes, or switch to hard difficulty with the damage set to 1-hit to have a challenge.

Maybe there's no point in me writing this review, since the developers never did anything else and then vanished, but I'll do it anyway. i like old-school shmups more than bullet hell games, so I was intrigued with this game described as "the shmup for those who aren't good at shmups". Well, it's true, it has no absurd bullet patterns or convoluted scoring systems, it's a nice 16bit-style game with no bugs or other problems, unfortunately it doesn't have much else going for it. The devs mentioned they wanted to implement a "Story Mode" but then went silent so I guess we're never going to know it it would've changed anything. [b]Pros:[/b] + Nice clear graphics with no slowdowns or other problems, the giant insect/bug/arachnid theme (think [i]Darius[/i] meets [i]Insector X[/i]) is nice too and not over-used. + The synthwave soundtrack is cool and quite good. In some stages the enemies seems to appear to the beat of the music! + The novelty system of the bosses having multiple parts is fine, especially when they have some annoying attacks, so you can focus on the part that does them to blow it up first and then milk the main body for points. + A few funny achievements that are…

Fun from beginning to end in couch co-op! Got a couple of "This is cool!" from both of us, as well as several funny moments when both of us activated our supers at the same time and MELTED the boss. Great music too. Love games that are fun for the sake of fun like this!

Nice shooter with an absolutely stellar soundtrack courtesy of Von Herztog, one of my favorite synthwave artists of all time. If you like 90's style shmups with a 16-bit art style then this is the game for you.

True to the game's description, this is an enjoyable and forgiving 16-bit shoot 'em up. I really enjoyed the soundtrack and graphics. Plenty of replay value, every time I replay I discover something new. Two thumbs up.
