About Obscura

Obscura is a puzzle-platformer in which the player uses different cameras to find colorful solutions to problems in a monochromatic world. The game was developed as a high school project by Griffon Hanson and Ty Morrow, and it won 7th place in the Computer Game & Simulation Programming event at the 2021 FBLA National Leadership Conference.
Everything the player sees is in black and white, but throughout the levels are cameras which display a primary color. Objects that match that primary color come into existence, which will allow the player to solve puzzles that they'd be faced with. However, they may also create objects that block the player's path, maybe causing the player to leave a camera behind to hold a perspective that they wouldn't be able to hold on their own. Obscura plays with perspective, platforming, and color as tools for creating an engaging experience for players. On top of this is the online leaderboard in which players race to climb for the top spot.
Grab your camera and see what's invisible. Neat idea just a bit confusing to play. You can see hidden objects only when using your tool, essentially what's not visible in the camera - doesn't exist. You can utilize that mechanic to get past obstacles. Dropping camera allow to keep invisible objects solid all the time (but you might not see them all the time) allowing you to interact with them. You have only 3 lives to complete each stage. Gameplay is frustrating and not for everyone. Level design lack some polish and is very basic. As you play, stages are going to become more and more annoying to say at least. Music is ambient pretty much. Overall play if you like to try new puzzle platformers with obscure gameplay otherwise pass on.
10 found this helpful
Somewhat challenging puzzle game focused around camera mechanics that make platforms appear/disappear. Would give neutral if i could.2 found this helpful

"Obscura" is more of a tech demo than a game. It's another case of Itch failing its primary role as a containment system, and as such we're left with this extremely amateurish puzzle game. What do you do in the game? The idea is that you use low quality cameras to solve problems in low quality, low poly/minimalist puzzle environments. Or, like almost every single gamer on Steam, don't (see below for the SteamDB counts, it's bad). The graphics aren't great. That's understandably be turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You deserve better than compromises. This is only free in a rudimentary sense... the developer has their hand out for a $2 USD "donation" for this as you're expected to buy soundtrack DLC from Steam to "support" the "developer"... digital panhandling. Like the homeless guys who splash dirty water on your windscreen at the traffic lights. No thanks. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam.…
Before I played Obscura, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
