About Please Wake Up

“Please Wake Up” is an original horror game that will hack your brain. Most horror games present the player with a fictional scare, oftentimes of creatures or gore. However, there is very real horror in our everyday lives that is completely under-explored. For example, research has shown that human memory is extremely unreliable, which leads many people to unknowingly construct false identities and narratives about themselves. Furthermore, we've discovered that our perception of reality is mostly 'hallucinated' by our brains -- not the outside world.

Every part of the game ties into this theme. Not only is real psychology and neuroscience research presented, but many other game features help drive home the effect. This includes the gameplay, which is simple and accessible -- but also engaging. Objects will change when you're not looking at them and it's your job to point out the changes. Players end up questioning the reliability and accuracy their own memory and perception. Furthermore, the game uses a number of psychological techniques to highlight the point even more. This includes the implantation of False Memories and the Mandela Effect. Another techniques used is the McCollough Effect, which is a visual illusion that can have a minor effect on vision for up to 2.8 months (players can turn this off in the settings).

All of this culminates and ties into a metafictional narrative that implies that the "reality" and "self" we experience aren't necessarily even real or accurate -- we just assume they are.

✦ AI summary

Players appreciate Please Wake Up as a creative take on the spot-the-difference horror genre with an interesting narrative twist involving memory reconstruction and observation challenges. While some praise its originality and clever use of environmental changes paired with distracting audio, others raise concerns about potential uncredited assets, occasional cheap jump scares, and unclear UI elements like the green and red line indicators. The game finds an audience among indie horror fans despite its rough edges and lack of polish typical of debut projects.

I'm not really sure if Please Wake Up is an asset flip. Some elements of this game certainly make it seem like the developer put some effort into assembling some kind of original here. On the other hand, a lot of the game assets don't seem like they were created by the developer, but they haven't credited any asset creators for supplying assets, which might be a case of plagiarism. There's no evidence, so we need to give the benefit of the doubt... regardless, asset flip or not, the quality here is indistinguishable from many asset flip/cash grab scams, and that's a problem in itself. Unlike your average Russian haunted house jumpscare game, this jumpscare game is somewhat more narrative driven as you take on the role of an amnesiac boy and must reconstruct memory through various tests and first person adventure jumpscare sequences, augmented with various audio snippets that are intended to build out the backstory. All of this could work well if coupled with an excellent technical delivery, which is absent in this game. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display.…

I found this in my library recently, and I'm glad I did. I LOVE horror games with "find the difference" themes. While I would like basic volume controls, I can also do that just fine on my desktop. This seems to be your only game, and it's a BRILLIANT effort. Why someone would think that any game by a new dev would be a polished AAA game is insane. I shat myself when I didn't see what was coming. It would be nice to have an option to listen to the full conversation, but for someone with ADHD I find it made it all the scarier because I *couldn't* really listen, the number of anomalies popping up were well paced, and kept it immersive. This is my favourite indie horror game I've played on stream. WELL DONE!

Short but sweet. Definitely a good game of the observation genre and for the price it's done well. If you're able to concentrate enough you will hear the underlying story or rather more story context through the radio. Not reccomended for people with vision problems.

Amazing memory and awareness game, love the concept and horror aspect. I would love to see more of this type of game maybe in a longer/more difficult format maybe even while doing other tasks within a single room or small map.

This game has a very interesting premise and puts a new spin on spot the difference horror where every time you turn away the environment shifts and changes. On more than one occasion I got caught out by the entire room being swapped round. The podcasts playing in the background is a nice touch and can actually make it harder to focus on the environment if you are engaging the auditory sensory aspects of your brain whilst also trying to form a memory of the room you are in. The jump scares if not noticed enough of the changes/click things that haven't changed is a little cheap and could probably have been replaced with something else that is more related to the game play experience. The recurring green and red lines left me a touch confused as to what was meant to be happening. Left down to my own interpretation I would say it was our memory becoming unstable. The ending was also definitely felt rushed with no conclusion to the story. Overall a very enjoyable game that I would suggest people try out.
