Pretty Dreadful: Heritage

Pretty Dreadful: Heritage is a point-and-click adventure about a young man from Japan who moved from a rural village to a big city but is forced to return to confront his past. Bit by bit, the game dips more and more into the supernatural, while keeping a melancholic tone with dark undertones. The puzzles are not obscure, and you can usually get hints here and there. I liked the visual style, which doesn't look fancy but is consistently cute and pleasant. Overall, it shows that a lot of thought and passion was put into this project.

Somewhat mediocre Japanese horror-themed point-and-click adventure game. Mechanically, it is very unpolished. No interesting spot highlights, so you need to pixel hunt like the old days. No inventory combination, so you have to go back to the combination table to do it. And the sound design is terrible. Footsteps are loud as a horse, when you go out to the street, it is like a derby! Music is the freeware stuff and became annoying after like 5 minutes. I just muted the game after 20 minutes before I lose my mind and dream about horses...again... Don't ask! Pretty Dreadful: Heritage is a narrative adventure game (not a dialog-heavy one) with simple inventory puzzles. Following the flow of the narrative, interacting with characters and seeing how the locations change over the course of the game feels nice and immersive. I liked the graphics style as well. The creepy effect of the shineless eyes was probably unintentional, but it fits the setting :). Most times the main character lets us know if we can't progress on a specific puzzle yet, and if he says something else, that usually means it's possible to do something there. There's still some running back and forth between locations looking for an object to interact with, an NPC who has a new dialog line, or some other change in one of the locations. The game doesn't have many locations, and there's a double-click-to-run option, so moving between locations is fast enough. One thing to keep in mind is that some of the hotspots are not obvious. It's not pixel hunting, but sometimes it's not clear that a certain thing is interactive. Making a "wrong" choice at a certain point ([spoiler]using the ofuda[/spoiler]) results in a very abrupt ending. But even with the other choice, the ending…
