You, your family, and the Weltel family are abducted by a secret unit of the regime and taken to an illegal, off-the-record underground facility beneath Oreinburg. Protocol X is a free horror adventure set in East Germany in 1975, and the setting is probably what interested me most. I am taken to an underground facility with my family and the Weltel family after being accused of espionage, and the whole place is connected to a secret experiment known as Protocol X. I have to explore the facility, deal with the experiments, bypass security and try to get everyone home safely. The story also gives me different choices that can change how things turn out, which gives the game a little more weight than a straightforward horror walk through. The atmosphere works quite well for a small game like this. The underground laboratory gives me a good reason to keep exploring because I want to understand what happened there and what Protocol X actually is. I like the historical setting too, since the East German backdrop gives the story something different from the usual haunted house or abandoned hospital setting. The game mixes exploration, puzzles, stealth and some action, so I am not doing exactly the same thing from start to finish. The choice system is another part I appreciate.
