Reach (2025)

Writing this review really hurts me...because the game has some fantastic parkour mechanics and movement controls, and I genuinely enjoyed it so far. But the grappling mechanic and the softlock I just encountered 3 hours into the game just soured the whole experience. Game literally started a new chapter and tells me to put an item out of a wrist storage that I collected in a previous level, and either the item just doesn't spawn or the wrist mechanic breaks. I tried to reload several times and only once I suddenly spawned in my wrist storage but then literally 2 min later I got another item I was supposed to store and it disappeared the second I put it in...

I have to say, Reach is becoming my favorite vr game of all time. I’m trying to understand how this wasn’t GOTY. It’s the most unique vr game mechanics that’s near perfect. I originally got this game at launch, but the Steam version was completely broken and unplayable at first. So, I refunded it and got it on PS5 PSVR2, which was in a much better state at the time. There were still some game breaking glitches over the run of the campaign, but they were all patched over the course of a month or so. Anyways, I loved the game so much, that I wanted it to try it wireless with my Quest 3, but PCVR for graphics, so I bought it on sale to give it another try, and I'm happy to say that everything seems to be fixed. I'm running it on Virtual Desktop, and it looks great and runs perfectly smooth.

Plays like a very well made 360 era title. It certainly doesn't deserve the 67% it's sitting at right now. Make no mistake - this is mostly a climbing / puzzle game, with a few combat section inbetween. The combat system is fairly simple, yet still offers more options than Half-life: Alyx did - and that is a highly praised game where combat is a major part. Apart from that, you have a lot of climbing, as well as very well executed mechanics belonging to it - from simple actions such as slinging you up from a ledge to grappling hooks. The puzzles are neat, but nothing that'll burst your brain. They're very much 7th console generation era puzzles. The story works fine, but again,nothing that'll blow your socks off. Unfortunately, the environments keep looking rather similar throughout the entire game - while they tried to make areas look different, you are essentially in the ruins of an ancient city, so everything looks like ruins. I did enjoy the music though. The strength in the game lays in how well it actually plays once your are finally accustomed to the mechanics and controls. i like how you can climb unlike other vr games

The game is great so far, story and mechanics are cool, reminds me of half life alyx every now and than, BUT there are glitches, some are big enough to where i have to restart a whole mission. Like the part where i need to climb 3 pillars to cross a big area, the pillars never reappeared after i died the first time. Had to restart the whole chapter.
