About Rendezvous

I can't remember the last time we smiled and laughed together.
After our parents died, you went one way and I went another.
Is this really how you want to see this through? To end up like them and hope we reunite?
I just wish for once that you'd stop running, stop lying, and look me in the eyes and say you missed me.
Is it really that hard to do Setyo?
Can you do that, for us
For what's left of our family?

About

Rendezvous is a 2.5D cyber-noir pixel art action-puzzle adventure game of family, betrayal, and dangerous secrets set against the backdrop of Bay City and Neo-Surabaya.

The story follows Setyo, a former criminal agent now living a mundane life as a security technician in Bay City. When an old companion turns up one evening at the local bar and reveals Setyo's sister is working with the most dangerous Cyberrunner group in Neo-Surabaya, Setyo realizes he must face his own sins and return to save what's left of his family. Can he save his sister from her future? And can he save himself from his past?

Surabaya in 2064

Immerse yourself in Neo-Surabaya, a futuristic version of the real-world city in Indonesia. Explore the network of streets and encounter preman thugs out to make a quick buck, shady cybernetic workshops using cannibalized parts, cyberunner gangs, and more -- all of which is in the midst of a collision between technological advancement that has overtaken the city and remnants of the old world trying to adapt to a brutal, unforgiving future.

Rendezvous is an ambitious cyberpunk adventure that succeeds by combining familiar futuristic themes with a setting and cultural identity rarely explored in the genre. Developed by Pendopo Creations and published by Hitcents, the game transports players to Neo-Surabaya, a technologically advanced version of Indonesia where towering neon structures, powerful criminal syndicates, and cutting-edge cybernetics shape everyday life. While many cyberpunk stories focus primarily on dystopian politics or corporate domination, Rendezvous places its emotional core on family, personal responsibility, and the consequences of past actions, giving the experience a more intimate and human dimension. The narrative follows Setyo, a former agent with a criminal history who has attempted to build a quieter life away from the chaos of his past. His plans unravel when his sister becomes involved with a dangerous cybercriminal organization, forcing him back into a world he hoped to leave behind forever. The journey that follows blends mystery, action, and personal drama, gradually revealing hidden truths while exploring themes of loyalty, regret, and redemption. The story remains engaging because it is …
Overall a pleasant cyberpunk adventure.

Here are my thoughts:
- The visual and aesthetics are the highlight of the game. - The music can be hit or miss. At first I thought there were not many tracks, but as the story progressed and picked up pace, I enjoyed the increased diversity. I also acknowledge this is an indie dev; - The story is not extremely original, but I enjoyed it and was looking forward seeing how the story unfolds; - As with a lot of cyberpunk adventure games, the lore is quite interesting, and the worldbuilding too; - The combat is not good. A lot of the first encounters are basically just trading hits with the opponent and healing occasionally. You can dodge but it's not very reliable. A lot of combat sequences can bug if you enter/leave/reenter an area; - The puzzles were overall good and diversified; - I enjoyed the inclusion of Indonesian culture spread throughout the world; - I enjoyed the voice acting. In this day and age of AI slop, I cherish artists.

Beautiful artwork let down by tedious gameplay and poor quality writing. The loading between locations is really slow and you go back and forth along the same linear street. Even escaping your bedroom at the start is a tedious advenutre game style puzzle. If the game's about Neo Surabaya, why are we starting in Neo Los Angeles meets Blade Runner. The appeal of the studio was that it was an Indonesian voice, menulis permainanmu di bahasa indonesia lah.

The game is good, but there are several aspects that need to be considered, such as the map transitions that take too long, the combat that's a bit tricky, and also the language being too formal. The game is very playable; it counts as a relaxing game but with a heavy story. There are some voiceovers here that are nice to hear, and there are also some that sound like they're just reading a script without any rhythm (the word 'anjing', for example). The character designs are also really cool, especially Sekar (MyIstri btw). Overall, it gets an 8.3/10. Hopefully local gamedevs keep growing, I'm waiting for the continuation of the story.

After failing dozens of times in some unfair combats and tricky polygraph tests, I still recommend Rendezvous as it gives me a unique cyberpunk experience. Even though I haven't visited Indonesia once, the details depict local life perfectly fit with the story theme, fascinating pixel artworks with immersive music. The plot is short but rich in content, dialogues throughout the game demonstrate social contradictions and people's struggles, which create emotionally resonant experience. I'm looking forward to the sequel, and please do some optimisation on gameplay.
