"Return to Northbury Grove" is a pointless, short VR tech demo from tinybuild, the partially Chinese owned business that colluded with Tencent backed interests to withhold their games from Steam (but not other platforms) in exchange for cash bribes. Which is illegal in terms of antitrust in California, so I guess they avoid doing business in some states. Because they've pulled games from Steam in favour of other platforms (for money) in the past, there's no guarantee they won't remove this game from Steam if offered enough bribe money. Fool me twice, right? What do you do in the game? It's a short VR tech demo with some bad VR physics. Wave your arms around, get jumpscared... if this was a full game from an ethical developer it might even be worthwhile. But it's not, and it isn't. Run around spooky dark environments avoiding the jumpscare monster. The game is quite short, and can be run through in just an hour at most. The lack of content here makes it hard to suggest it's worth spending the time to add to your library and download. I usually dont write reviews, but here is my first thing I noticed when playing. THE ENEMY AI IS THE MOST ANNOYING THING I HAVE ENCOUNTERED. He has cameras set up all over the place so whenever you get him to finally go away, he just comes straight back because there are some spots where you need to be but theres a camera there. Dont get me wrong, its fun, and its pretty well made for a free game. Just please fix the AI to make it more... strategic. I think if the enemy was better to go against I would have kept playing.
The game provides a brief yet engaging horror story that can be completed in under an hour. Despite its short length, it offers considerable replayability through a variety of game modifiers. Interestingly, the game's lore appears to be connected to Happy's Humble Burger Farm, another more sophisticated title from the Scythe Dev Team. Who knows, perhaps we can look forward to a lengthier installment in this eerie universe in the future...
