Rising Kingdoms

One of the RTS games I found back in the day when I was looking for something Warcraft-like, and now, years later, I’ve finally managed to finish its campaign. While it clearly lacks the production quality of some of the bigger RTS titles of its era, it does its best to deliver a proper fantasy story. Unfortunately, without high-quality cutscenes, it lacks some of the immersion that other RTS games of the time were able to provide. Still, the game offers three distinct factions, each with its own personality and identity. You probably won’t find the basic faction archetypes unfamiliar, but the particular combination of ideas and mechanics feels quite unique to Rising Kingdoms. And I won’t even get started on the art direction. It simply hasn’t aged much at all. The visuals are still wonderful and distinctive, and I’m still amazed by how 2D RTS games from that period managed to give their factions and worlds so much personality through art alone. All in all, an easy recommendation—just make sure to play it with the community fixes.

Ever since the release of Tzar: The Burden of the Crown in 1999, Bulgaria proved itself as a country which has a lot of creative potential and the originality to match, and create all-time strategy classics. Rising Kingdoms is another underrated jewel from the mid 00s by the same bulgarian studio - Haemimont Games - which created Tzar... Although I didnt play Rising Kingdoms back in the day, I grew up with Tzar: The Burden of The Crown, Celtic Kings & Carthage. Had that game fallen into my hands then, I would have become a huge fan of it as well. Luckily, Haemimont have it available on Steam. Another proof that Haemimont was and still is an amazing studio, which Bulgaria could be proud of.

Still as amazing as when it came out back then. It's a pity they never made a 2nd game, cuz it had so much potential.
