About School: The Hardest RPG in Your Life
The Story
Eli hasn’t always been the brightest crayon in the box, mainly because he ate those ones back in kindergarten. It’s almost summer break and he is ready for it, he has made multiple plans with his best friend, Joey. However, there is only one thing that is in his way, HIS GRADES. The government has just passed a law where if a student has a failing overall grade they will have to go to Summer School for the entire break. Determined to change his fate of an entire summer break spent at school Eli has hatched a plan for his final day of school. He is going to challenge all of his teachers and peers to an RPG battle for his GRADE. On the last day of school, Eli gets ready to challenge every single person in his school and to challenge everything we knew about High School.

I don't know if this team is ever going to release an update for this game since it was a college project, but if they do then here's some problems that hurt the game a lot: Unskippable 5 minute cutscene that plays every time you die Character screen softlocks the game Animation jank and unclear dodge mechanics (I can't tell if I'm not taking damage because of a bug or if they missed) You can't target multiple enemies with the mouse, you have to use keyboard to do that, just a minor inconvenience Soft locked during the first boss, I'm not sure if there's more after or not Can't use items outside of combat and no description for them No ability descriptions, bandage is obvious, but what's the difference between spit and insult? No clear level up system The first boss spams way too many enemy friends, maybe that's on purpose but it gets overwhelming quickly There's a foundation, and if you do decide to keep working on it there could be a solid game here. You just gotta make sure the game doesn't kill itself doing basic things and add some MAJOR qol things. I give a recommendation because I did enjoy when I actually got to fight, and I know what it's like to rush a game out for a fi…3 found this helpful
School: The Hardest RPG in Your Life is a student project from Neumont College of Computer Science. One of the first things students should be taught in game development is that 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid 1990's with dedicated 3D cards like the Voodoo3 and the ATI Rage. But the students were deliberately mistaught that's it's okay to release obsolete 2D games in the 3D era of gaming... certainly any professional developer seeing a prospective new hire who doesn't even know about 3D gaming probably isn't going to give them a job. Needless to say if an educational institution taught me incorrectly on purpose, I'd ask for my money back. This is a really poorly made, simplistic lightweight "I can't believe it's not RPG Maker" RPG with a theme around surviving school and passing classes or having to go to summer school instead of getting time off. A lot like the students here, who had to make a 2D game and then discovered their tuition didn't tell them that game companies don't hire developers who can't make games for the 21st century, which use 3D graphics. This is worthless in any student portfolio, and even more worthless for us gamers, who were never considered a…1 found this helpful
