About Solar Showdown

Welcome to Solar Showdown

This is Solar Showdown - an edge-of-your-seat couch competitive game where you take on the roles of a farmer and a botanist, both harvesting solar power to build defenses and produce minions to attack your opponent's towers.

With a variety of strategic options at your disposal, from defensive turrets to shields, the key to victory lies in generating enough solar power to outpace your rival and activate your base's ultimate weapon.

Will you focus on building an impenetrable fortress, or unleash a swarm of minions to overwhelm your opponent? The choice is yours in this high-stakes battle for dominance.

Gather your friends and get ready to engage in intense 2-player action as you compete to blow up your opponent and claim victory in Solar Showdown!

What is Solar Showdown?

Solar Showdown is a 2-player competitive game with RTS and Tower Defense elements. It requires 2 controllers to play local multiplayer.

A BYU Center for Animation Capstone Project

This project was planned, developed, and tested over the course of a little less than a year, completely through student work. We are proud of what we were able to accomplish in that time period. However, please note that Solar Showdown is not representative of a complete game. Additionally, many of the students who worked on this have moved on to other coursework, internships, or jobs, meaning future work on this game after release is unlikely. While what we have released showcases the core mechanics and gameplay features we wanted in our game, it may contain bugs, optimization problems, and other issues that impact the overall experience. We appreciate your understanding and your feedback.

If you do decide to play this game, play it with a grain of salt. Also for the love of god, please read the description with your working eyeballs attached to your brain. Is this game anywhere near absolute perfection? No way. Is it a bit graphically intensive comparatively to what is actually happening on the screen? Absolutely. Is there any multiplayer aspect to this game? Nope, go get a friend for some Couch PVP Is there any way this game is going to actually get updated past release on Jun 14, 2023? 99% chance it is never going to receive another update. Does it NEED two Xbox controllers to be played? Yes, it says so in the description of the game. "Solar Showdown is a 2-player competitive game with RTS and Tower Defense elements. It requires 2 controllers to play local multiplayer." However you have to really think deeper to understand and see what this game actually represents, this is a student-lead Capstone project for a bunch of people who have never actually made a video game before. The time and effort put into this product from people who have no business and absolutely no prior knowledge of how a game is going to be made makes this product, despite it's flaws, a b…

"Solar Showdown" is a student project from the Church of Latter Day Saints via their academic arm at BYU in Utah. Thankfully they made this a somewhat secular effort. This is a "couch co-op" (read: We don't know how to teach our students how to do netcode) PvP game with some lightweight RTS elements and a cartoony theme. The visuals are great because it's from the animation school at BYU, and kudos, they nailed that. Shame they didn't nail the gameplay, too. This is a 1v1 experience and much like they didn't know how to teach the students how to do netcode, they also didn't know how to code any AI, so this is basically a game for nobody. Gameplay is a not even badly concepted blend of tower attack/defense and RTS... this could really go somewhere if the scope of the game wasn't so horribly limited because it's a student project. The graphics in this game are really quite good, which at least makes the game look more appealing. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's no…

The concept is good, but the game doesn't have CPU (AI) opponents, so it like an empty game to play with yourself.

Press A to play. Well that's if you have a controller. Else it seems unstartable. Alt+F4 to shut down
