If you do decide to play this game, play it with a grain of salt. Also for the love of god, please read the description with your working eyeballs attached to your brain. Is this game anywhere near absolute perfection? No way. Is it a bit graphically intensive comparatively to what is actually happening on the screen? Absolutely. Is there any multiplayer aspect to this game? "Solar Showdown" is a student project from the Church of Latter Day Saints via their academic arm at BYU in Utah. Thankfully they made this a somewhat secular effort. This is a "couch co-op" (read: We don't know how to teach our students how to do netcode) PvP game with some lightweight RTS elements and a cartoony theme. The visuals are great because it's from the animation school at BYU, and kudos, they nailed that. Shame they didn't nail the gameplay, too. This is a 1v1 experience and much like they didn't know how to teach the students how to do netcode, they also didn't know how to code any AI, so this is basically a game for nobody. Gameplay is a not even badly concepted blend of tower attack/defense and RTS... this could really go somewhere if the scope of the game wasn't so horribly limited because it's a student project. The graphics in this game are really quite good, which at least makes the game look more appealing. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. Solar Showdown takes the familiar foundations of real-time strategy and tower defense and compresses them into a fast, competitive experience designed primarily for two players sharing the same battlefield. Instead of attempting to reproduce the complexity of a traditional RTS, it focuses on a smaller collection of interconnected mechanics involving resource generation, defensive construction, unit deployment, and direct competition. Developed by BYU Animation - Class of 2023 and published by BYU Center for Animation, the game originated as a student capstone project, which helps explain both its creative ideas and relatively limited overall scope. The competition revolves around solar power, which acts as the essential resource behind nearly everything players accomplish. Each side needs to gather and manage energy while deciding whether those resources should immediately strengthen defenses, create offensive units, or contribute toward a more powerful long-term objective.
