Sovereign Tea takes an amusing fantasy premise and builds a surprisingly thoughtful turn-based strategy RPG around it. Instead of relying on the familiar kingdoms of humans, elves, or monsters, its world is dominated by Tea Realms threatened by the expanding Coffee Empire. Twelve Tea Princesses must overcome their differences and cooperate against a much more unified enemy. The playful conflict between tea and coffee gives the adventure an immediately recognizable personality, yet the campaign is more mechanically involved than its colorful presentation might initially suggest. Sovereign Tea was developed and published by 3 Halves Games, with its design placing tactical decision-making ahead of spectacle. The campaign revolves around grid-based battles in which preparation can be just as important as the fighting itself. I first heard of Sovereign Tea when it went from paid to free. It seemed like an interesting game with a meme-y premise and a somewhat cartoon-y art style, so I went into it expecting something light and unserious; in a word, "cutesy". I was not prepared for the political and interpersonal [i]drama[/i]. In a game about "Tea Princesses" fighting something called the "Coffee Empire" I was [i]not[/i] expecting entrenched classism, personal betrayal, deep introspection, accusations between Tea Princesses of being sent on missions to their death, or a debate about executing a political prisoner of war whom everyone agreed had done nothing wrong but who was worth nothing as leverage and potentially too dangerous to leave alive. I was not expecting Tea Princesses wrestling with the concept of just war theory, the limits of pacifistic isolationism as a normative theory of ethics, or the unfolding of a complicated historical drama as Tea Princesses and Coffee Regents alike struggled with the all-too-human legacy of a dark and painful past that some of them had participated in and others were inheriting. Sovereign Tea is one of those games where the idea sounds completely ridiculous until I actually start playing it. The Tea Realms are being invaded by the Coffee Empire, and I have to lead a group of Tea Princesses against them. It is a turn based strategy RPG, but instead of building a normal army I am brewing little Tea Minions and sending them into battle. I really like how committed the game is to the tea and coffee theme because it gives the whole thing a lot of personality. The combat is where I think the game gets much better than the joke initially suggests. I am fighting on grid based maps, collecting resources and deciding which minions I want to brew for each level. There are more than 40 types of Tea Minions and each one has different stats and abilities. Some are better at dealing damage, some are useful for taking hits and others have abilities that work especially well against certain enemy types. I have to actually think about what I am bringing into a fight instead of just using the same few units every time. Criminally underrated, especially for a free-to-play game (absolutely deserves to be charging). Great strategy game with a depth to characters and story that is completely unexpected but incredibly appreciated. Let's commit war crimes!

This game was pretty enjoyable, grindy at the end but this is normal due to the different mechanics. It is quite normal for a fight to take 40+ minutes by the end of the game but the fact that strategy is involved and it isn't mindless unit spam makes it bearable . All an all A good experience would recommend.
