Am I an 8-year-old? Why am I as tall as the record player? Why can I barely walk around the house? The controls don't really work. I tapped on the piano for 5 minutes, apparently that produced one sheet of music, and got bored and quit.

Stan is a surprisingly tense little horror game because it takes a very ordinary problem and turns it into something genuinely uncomfortable. I play as J.W. Eel Slug, a piano player who has been given a midnight deadline to finish recording music, while an obsessive fan keeps leaving notes around my house. I liked the idea immediately because I have to balance working on the music with dealing with someone who is slowly becoming more threatening. The piano mechanic is probably the most interesting part. I actually have to use different rows of the keyboard to play the black and white piano keys while trying to record the required music correctly. I enjoyed this because it makes the deadline feel more real. I am not simply watching my character perform. I am responsible for getting the music done before time runs out. The fan creates a good layer of pressure. If I ignore the notes, things become more dangerous, but acknowledging them also encourages the fan to make further demands. I liked that uncomfortable balance because there is no completely safe solution. The more I interact, the more involved the situation becomes, and the more I have to divide my attention between the pian…
