Star Squadron Student Driver is an unusual hybrid 2D retro pixel top down shooter/maze negotiation/speed runner game where you "fly" a spaceship through a maze, alternatively shooting things or collecting things or dodging things to get to the win zone as fast as you can. The implementation here is very poor, partly due to the poor choice in game engines, it's using Godot, the craptastic game engine that gives the even more craptastic GameMaker Studio a run for the money on the race to be the worst thing to happen to gaming since microtransactions. The game only displays in fullscreen and locks out your desktop, you can't alt + tab. This is completely unacceptable. Resolution and controls are locked, and can't be changed or customised to improve the visuals or the control experience. A choice was made to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.
