About State of Extinction
State of Extinction is a mature story-driven hack-n-slash role playing game (RPG) for PC Windows, Mac and Linux set in a science-fantasy Antediluvian (Pre-Flood) world of early man. Mystical ancestral paintings on hidden rocks prophesy about humanity’s salvation. Man and Beast are both becoming bolder, fiercer and more organized with each waning moon. As a black shadow of corruptness and death blackens the land with the blood of many, you must evolve as a leader to stand against this threat.
Passing from boy to man, you will train in the ancient skills of your calling while questioning your beliefs and the role of man during a state of extinction.
Introduction
State of Extinction is developed and published by Stone Pixel Games LLC. Since it’s their first Steam project and within Early Access stage to boot, I shall consider this a preview rather than fully fledged review. Alas, I shall judge it by the same standard I use, in regards to my reviewed video games.
Gameplay
Fetch quests. This is the phrase which seems to describe the vast majority of time you shall spend in State of Extinction. Even if I am a history buff, I can accept some…artistic liberties undertaken by those which try to make history more digestible for the masses. History has little to do with truth, since it is always manipulated by those which control power under its many forms. And yet fiction it is not. The game I’m analyzing today? It brings together both hominids and dinosaurs within the same time frame. Dinosaurs existed during Mesozoic Era (250 to 65 million years ago) while hominids (early humans) did not evolve from primates until about 3 million years ago. The latest stages of evolution, ♥♥♥♥ sapiens and ♥♥♥♥ neanderthalensis not appearing until about 200,000 years ago. I mentioned those two since even within this game, the “val…45 found this helpful
Don't waste your money on this game. It looks interesting, but the game is not at all fun. Fetch quests where the items are not able to be found at times. Minimal combat. Hunting is a joke. Plus the game seems to have been completely abbandoned by the devs. No updates in months. Save your money. Don't buy this game. It's a shame, really. This game had potential.16 found this helpful
For a "new take on your traditional role playing game", this pretty much feels like a conventional RPG with fantasywords for established terms. The Gameplay is not that different from many other Hack-and-Slay-RPG's, except for the crafting maybe, which is a mechanic very fitting for the setting. Other than that, the narrative is somewhat bland, terms like "calling" for your character or "howling" for your overall goal feel more forced than anything and will be very frustrating in the game's tutorial, as you don't just have to learn the game's mechanics, but also guess what everything stands for. The soundtrack ranges from acceptable to immersive, the soundeffects are okay. The Voiceacting for the cavemen, as well as in the introduction, is absolutely terrible. While the narrator in the beginning sounds like somebody doing their best "old-lady"-voice, the mumbling of the cavemen will tear your best efforts of immersion apart. Graphicswise, I am not a fan either. I know this is a mature RPG. but why does everything look like bubblegloop swamp from banjo-kazooie? Where are the lush, green woods and wild plants? How about some colour? Or if you want to talk maturity, how about some…5 found this helpful
Should have listened to all the reviews saying this game is nothing but a money grab, the developers have pretty much abandoned it and it sucks.1 found this helpful
its a good game a little slow and clunky at times but looks good and there is a good enough story to keep you interested hope the devs havent abandoned this as it could turn out to be a hidden gem1 found this helpful
To counter-balance some of the negative reviews here, this is a pretty enjoyable game. Long time since an update tho.
