If you're like me, you're wary of purchasing "retro 2D platformers" on Steam right now because of the metric crud-ton of Unity & GameMaker tutorial asset reskins out there. Maybe you're even, like me, making your own 2D platformer that you think is 'better'. As a similarly-inspired developer: This game is one you should get to play in between sessions of making your own. Not for direct level design inspiration or anything, I just mean to put you in the "Damn! 2D platformers are FUN, especially when they have a great design and jolly chiptune soundtrack" sort of mood. Mr. Dev seems like a cool chap, as well. But speaking just as a player: It's exciting to play something as smooth and authentic as Super Hiking League. Really good stuff. Excellent controls (and numerous control/difficulty/style options- BIG EXTRA CREDIT). The graphics are really good (better than they look in the static screenshots, they really breathe in-game). As I alluded to, the music is lovely. I will play LOTS more. Kudos! ~ Josh http://dirtbug.games10 found this helpful

I recently played another game I quite enjoyed that had DX at the end for no reason, and knowing few games do something like that, was sufficient cause for me to install this title now. If I liked one, why not the other?
Gameplay
The title of the game is a bit wordy, but it more or less summarizes the game's focus. This game is all about hiking to the top of any location faster than your opponent, in order to snag the gem there. Sometimes enemy slimes will get in your way, you'll occasionally mirror your opponent and take your own identical route to the top, and a few races have more empty space and flowers than land. Anything is possible in the wacky world of gaming. Now that I think about it, hiking is probably the wrong activity considering you make use of elastic safety ropes to fling yourself upwards. That's more of…7 found this helpful

Super Hiking League is pretty simple, but it offers enough levels and challenge to make it worthwhile. Play it on normal difficulty and push through the early stages — you’ll soon find yourself in a tense competitive game!1 found this helpful
Multiplayer is solid but single player would benefit from significant revision
I found this game because of the designer's Super Pitfall hack, which is an excellent endeavor, and I purchased it both in appreciation of that achievement and because grappling is my favorite game mechanic. I really wanted to give this game a glowing review, but unfortunately it sabotages itself in unnecessary ways. The multiplayer works well because all players are equally hindered, but the single player turns into a rather joyless slog in later levels. Level 25 is perhaps the worst offender, because it adds puzzle solving that reduces the field to one path. This works against the game's whole conceit. I have beaten the game and I still have no idea how the grapple mechanic is intended to function. The tutorial provides no guidance and doesn't let the player interact or practice in any way (it only provides a few obtuse text windows). I have experimented with all three modes, and there seems to be no consistency among them regarding what the player is supposed to do. The game has three choices of grapple mechanic, multiple difficulty levels, and a beginner mode. Rather than offering variety…1 found this helpful
