The Paper Trials

An engaging maze game with charmingly unique art and a single map offering great replay value. Can't wait for the future updates!

"The Paper Trials" is not a complete game. It's an advertisement/demo, and you have to pay more money through DLC to actually unlock the game. What do you get if you let the deceptive and shady marketing win and pay the DLC toll to unlock the game? The Paper Trials is a first person adventure game with a mild horror theme and using a deprecated DooM like 3D model with 2D sprites overlaid on the world instead of creating 3D models, because game development is too hard for some developers. As is marketing their game ethically by not locking and paygating the entire game behind DLC. It's stylized to look like 2D ink drawing, but this is like 0.005% the quality and content of more professionally developed games like Bendy and the Ink Machine (which I do recommend). What do you do in the game? The story involves you being trapped in a nightmarish maze, with your sole hope for escape being to find all the pages of a mysterious book. Gameplay centers around running from enemies to avoid death. Hiding and standing still are fatal. You need to discover routes through the maze to collect the book pages. But remember... you don't get the full game unless you pay up. And in this…

This game is actually based on the re-roll of the level until you manage to beat it and feels like quite quick-paced. However, it is ridiculously slow-paced in terms of the interface and making restarts: there are a loading and a cut scene every time you restart the trial. So quite a lot of time is wasted just to make another try. Not even saying that watching the same cut-scene every time is an utterly bad game design in terms of gameplay. The menu is so contrastingly slow and you even have to wait while its sections switch. On top of that, you can't just press Esc to get back to game - you have to press the Resume button with your mouse. The gameplay feels repetitive and you only have to stick to minimap. I don't get people who admire the game's replayability. The camera is awkward and doesn't feel convenient in some specific way. And half of the achievements even cannot be gained. What is cool is music and the visual design is decent too. But it's not enough for this game to be recommended.

I really love the style of it! Very nice looking game. I hope it derails more from Dark Deception (if I have the name right), since I was able to fly through the first level pretty easily because I already played that. Might check out Chapter 2 if I have the free time, though, since it's pretty fun so far!

One of the most interesting game concepts I’ve played recently. It’s like a 3D horror pacman in a hand drawn universe. Definitely will be checking out the new chapters.
