The Red Prison

The Red Prison is an abandoned Early Access old school 2D retro pixel Western/Classical RPG made using the open gaming license Dungeons and Dragons (5th ed) rules. The gameplay is reminscient of Ultima where you choose or create a character and them amble around an open world exploring and fighting all manner of monsters to get XP, go up levels, all that good stuff that we love about RPGs. The game was written in Python and was abandoned in May, 2020. I'm very seldom impressed by most indie dev game efforts, they tend to be shallow, lacklustre, and more often than not are slapped together with video game construction kits, which require barely any know-how and involve no real game development skill. In many cases these games are direct copies of game templates/asset packs, slapped together badly and then quickly rushed onto Steam as a cash grab. I couldn't be more pleased to see an actual, genuine effort coupled with a great, tried and true game concept, the Western/Classical RPG. Awesome 5th Edition OGL Dungeons & Dragons type dungeon crawler roguelike! :) Great mechanics, fun to build a party and dive deeper into unique, procedurally generated locations fighting all types of D&D monsters! Highly recommended if you like roguelikes. Still being updated! A+!

Графически игра выполнена в стиле, который хорошо передает угнетающую атмосферу тюрьмы, хотя кому-то она может показаться устаревшей. Главное достоинство игры – это её сложность. Ресурсы ограничены, враги опасны, и каждое решение имеет последствия. Придется постоянно думать на несколько шагов вперед и тщательно планировать свои действия. Это может отпугнуть казуальных игроков, но любителям хардкора игра точно придется по вкусу. Боевая система проста, но эффективна, и требует тактического подхода к каждому бою. Из минусов можно отметить некоторую repetitiveness заданий и иногда нелогичность поведения врагов. Также встречаются небольшие технические проблемы, но они не критичны и не сильно портят впечатление от игры. В целом, "The Red Prison" – это неплохой survival horror, который предлагает сложный и захватывающий геймплей, а также затягивающую историю. Рекомендую любителям жанра, готовым к испытаниям.

Started the game and made a rogue. Hired two thugs and a guard to go along with me. Went to the first town and since they did not pay me any protection started killing everyone. A guard knocked me out so my guys healed me. Then Saint Barnabus started lecturing us about using healing magic, so I killed him too. Then the town guard killed me and my party. There really needs to be an ending screen. The only thing I got was a merchant talking and then the game would not respond anymore. Anyways, a fun time was had for free.
