This Strange Realm Of Mine

Overall a mixed bag that I don't see appealing to really anyone. There are too many baffling design decisions to recommend. I will say that the game has a certain earnest charm to it and I liked the designs of some of the characters. Occasionally the gunplay has a fun moment or two but overall it's a painfully bland experience. The game feels confused, like it didn't know what it wanted to be, and as other reviewers have noted almost feels like a school project designed for some Philosophy 101 class than a proper game. It feels like someone's philosophic and psychological ramblings interspersed with small bits of gameplay that don't really add up to anything. Nothing ever builds, the game is so busy throwing you into another wacky hallucination there's never any time to let things sit or feel meaningful. All the characters are written pretty dreadfully, in that I feel absolutely nothing for any of them because rather than give them backstories or interesting personalities they're all just mouthpieces for the developers pseudo-intellectual ramblings and it comes off both pretentious and ineffectual at developing a mood and feels very hamfisted and amateurish like the dev is trying…

i am giving this my full recommendation, you need to play this game. very awesome and does what it says it does, a fun shooter with dark edgy themes. very trippy and very existential too. its worth a play, play it. but also, dont play it at night, it gets freaky towards the end of the game.

Picked this up on a whim. Thought provoking with fun combat. I may go back to follow the other routes sometime.

This Strange Realm of Mine is a mixed bag. There are a few good horror moments and a bit of interesting dialog. The gameplay is basic, but that's what you expect in a game like this. The real draw of this kind of game is the story and horror moments. Most of the out and out horror is good, and some of it is great. The game's visual design and music is really well done, which is surely part of why its horror works well. Clearly, this game has a lot of effort put in, and that makes it quite charming. However, the story is the real meat of this game, mostly delivered through dialog and poems that appear between levels. I don't want to be harsh on the game's creator, and I'll preface this by saying that I had fun playing the game and reading its dialog and poetry, and I think I got a little something out of the experience. I certainly found some of it very interesting; this game's plot circuits in very interesting topics, and its visual presentation is generally excellent. a beautifully-crafted game with a heavy philosophical focus and some decent FPS gameplay and light horror elements along the way. the gunplay is that of a rudimentary boomer shooter: it's satisfying enough, but there are only three basic weapon options available, and rarely are you allowed to have all of them at once. there aren't that many enemy types, and they all function exactly the same, only varying by health amount. but the shooter aspect isn't actually the main focus here, so i'll sum this up by saying: it's fine. it's clear most of the care was put into the narrative--or rather, the philosophy surrounding it. while it isn't always successful, the craft it applies to its arguments is extremely impressive. the sheer amount of readable dialogue can get overwhelming, and often spoils the pacing quite a bit, but ultimately does present some thoughtful points about life and personal growth. i do wish the characters had some more depth to them, but they're ultimately there to serve a single purpose in the story, and they do that well enough. this game requires a bit of patience, and is not something i'd recommend to people looking for a traditional FPS experience. however, it'…
