What Happened Here?

Very cute game altogether, albeit somewhat messy in its current state. The pixelart looks stunning, with adorable maps and character designs. Plus the soundtrack is lovely and just has that perfect RPG vibe lol, enhancing the immersive atmosphere. Honestly I'm obsessed with the game's aesthetic.. Also the story, as well as the characters with their relations seem very intriguing and engrossing, however it would've been better to have more depth in that regard, as the short playlength and brief writing make the experience feel rather rushed and incomplete. Sadly enough the game is actually incomplete on top of that, with some content still being in development for a while, but for some reason the achievements already being available?.. I hope to get updates, because on surface level this is very appealing and has the potential to be a solid story.

Very cute and short game. Story was interesting with a good twist. Would love to see more from this, might give the prequel story a read. Wish I knew how to get the last achievement I am missing.

This review has a few spoilers. The game's free, so have fun going in blind Fun game. I've had a lot of fun trying to 100% it. That being said, the "Empty like my soul" achievement appears to be broken or tied behind a specific event/condition. I tried everything I could think of, from exploring after getting the Manly Ending, interacting with the trash can, and resetting my save and game roughly 5 times. The fact that I can't see, to 100% the game does upset me a bit, but overall, I had fun.

What Happened Here? is a short horror adventure that I found surprisingly charming despite how small it is. I play as Elly, a young woman who comes home from work and discovers that her house has completely changed and her roommates are nowhere to be found. From there, I have to explore the house, solve puzzles and figure out what happened. It uses a classic horror setup, but the cute pixel art and limited colour palette give the whole thing a very different feeling from a typical horror game. The exploration is simple, but I liked how the game makes me pay attention to my surroundings. I move around the house, interact with objects and look for clues that can help me understand what is going on. There are several puzzles built into the story, and they are generally more about paying attention and figuring out what the game is showing me than dealing with complicated mechanics. I enjoyed that because it keeps the focus on the mystery rather than turning the game into a frustrating puzzle challenge. The characters are another part that I liked. Elly is not simply walking around an empty haunted house, because the mystery involves her roommates and the strange things that have happ…

To start with the stuff that I did like, this game has a great color palette for its fantastic visuals, dialogues aren't dragged and do move the story forward while also building upon its characters. There are some visual bugs I encountered while playing but nothing game breaking. It was indeed a interesting choice to have the background sprites a different pixel size than the player model personally I have mixed feeling about it. There a huge amount of 4 wall breaking for a 40 minute game, I would simply lie if I said that it didn't disturb my immersion. But do I recommend it? kinda. The story overall isn't something too engaging to say at least but man the art is so great.
