Is Red Dead Redemption 2 worth it in 2026?

What it is

Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar's 2018 open-world Western, and years on it remains one of the most detailed games ever made. The slow collapse of the Dutch van der Linde gang is genuinely affecting, the acting and writing are superb, and the world reacts to you in small, believable ways that few games manage. On PC it runs and looks tremendous, with sharp visuals, generous graphics options and a lengthy single-player story, plus the separate Red Dead Online mode. As a total package it is enormous, and the ambience of riding through its shifting landscapes still holds up beautifully.

The catch

It is deliberately, sometimes frustratingly, slow. Looting, skinning and cooking are all animation-heavy, the controls feel weighty rather than snappy, and the opening hours in the snowy mountains test your patience before the game truly opens up. If you want brisk, arcade-style action you may bounce off it. The PC version also had a rocky launch and can still stutter on some setups, so it is worth confirming it runs well on your hardware. Some players simply prefer the wider sandbox mischief of Grand Theft Auto V Legacy, which is faster and more chaotic by design.

The verdict

Mostly yes. If you value atmosphere, storytelling and a lived-in world over pace, this is close to essential, and it is a huge amount of game for the money. It rarely sits at full price for long, so it is easy to recommend picking it up whenever it dips near its all-time low.
