About Richard & Alice

Richard and Alice are prisoners. Both their cells have a leather sofa and a state-of-the-art computer. But only Richard’s has a TV.

Outside, the snow falls. It has done for some time. Elsewhere, they say, parts of the world have been rendered an inhospitable desert, the earth parched and cracked. People live in the zones now. The lucky ones, anyway.

Richard and Alice have secrets.

Created by Lewis Denby and Ashton Raze, whose games journalism credits include the likes of Eurogamer, Gamespot and the Telegraph, Richard & Alice is a riveting mystery story about family, desperation and the weather – all set to the beat of an indie adventure game.

✦ AI summary

Players praise this point-and-click adventure for its mature, well-written story with meaningful choices that lead to multiple endings, sensible puzzle logic, and believable characters dealing with heavy themes of survival and desperation. However, many criticize the gameplay itself as tedious and frustrating, with slow character movements, confusing mechanics that often require guides, and padded pacing that makes progressing feel like a chore—though most agree the strong narrative payoff, particularly in later chapters, makes it worth enduring the mechanical frustrations.

Richard & Alice is a story-driven point-and-click adventure game that could be considered a thriller and a mystery title. However, it leaves too much to the observer's interpretation, which made me think it’s either rushed or falls short without the developers ' intentions. As the title implies, you play as two protagonists called Richard and Alice who ended up in prison for different reasons after the world fell victim to the endless snowfall that caused a dystopian state and forced people to live in dedicated safe zones, rendering the majority of the Earth uninhabitable. The story mostly revolves around Alice and her son since you witness her backstory in detail, whereas Richard’s is mostly left to interpretation, but both of them have been pushed into a corner by the harsh reality and have done questionable things. It’s a very tragic tale that explores the idea of faith and its necessity in human life, and how morals take shape depending on the comfort of the individuals. The fragility of human nature is conveyed so well that it becomes a memorable experience for this reason alone. It doesn’t take long to see all the endings, and it doesn’t cost that much; therefo…

Recommended for all fans of PNC adventure games with mature themes. While I enjoy humor as much as the next person, IMO too many PNC adventure games are cutesy/humor based. I was able to run this without difficulty on a Windows 11 based computer.

A tragic, dramatic story with multiple endings (based entirely on decisions from day 6 on). If you like a story with a bunch of mysteries that you can guess at before the end, you'd probably enjoy this one. There are many heavy topics and events found within however, since it's a story concerning complete anarchic chaos and desperate survival decisions. It never comes off as excessive though, and competently communicates the sad, lonely desperation that results from such times.

An enjoyable story, surrounded by gameplay that will make you want to uninstall. Personally, I think it was worth going through, but I also never want to touch the game again.

Very well written, touching story with relatable characters and a very believable world. Puzzles make sense: no nonsense logic like some games. Just long enough, didn't overstay its welcome. Recommended.
