About Influent Language Learning Game

✦ AI summary

Learn foreign language vocabulary by exploring an interactive 3D apartment where you click everyday objects to hear native speaker pronunciations in real time. Influent strips away rigid lessons and pressure, letting you absorb practical words at your own pace through intuitive context-based discovery across multiple languages.

INFLUENT: A 3D LANGUAGE LEARNING VIDEO GAME

Influent is a language learning game on Steam that teaches foreign language vocabulary through exploration and interaction. Instead of traditional learning methods, Influent places players inside a fully interactive 3D apartment where everyday objects can be clicked to reveal their names and pronunciation in the selected language. This approach helps language learners associate words with real world context by seeing objects in their natural environment making vocabulary easier to remember and more intuitive to recall and use in real life situations.Designed for language learners, students, travelers, and polyglots alike, Influent focuses on building a strong foundation of practical vocabulary. Each word's pronunciation is voiced by native speakers, allowing players to hear accurate pronunciation while learning naturally. Influent supports multiple languages and allows players to learn at their own pace without time limits, pressure, or rigid lesson structures.

LEARN LANGUAGES THROUGH EXPLORATION

Influent turns language learning into an exploratory experience. Players can walk freely through a realistic apartment and interact with absolutely everything in the game, including furniture, household items, doors, drawers, and appliances. Every object is labeled in the chosen language, making it easy to connect vocabulary with familiar items from everyday life. This method is especially effective for beginners and visual learners who want to learn vocabulary in context rather than memorizing word lists. Players can repeat audio as often as they like and explore words in any order, reinforcing learning through curiosity and repetition.

NATIVE SPEAKER AUDIO PRONUNCIATIONS

Every language in Influent includes native speaker audio for all vocabulary words. This ensures accurate pronunciation and helps learners develop better listening skills alongside vocabulary recognition. Hearing words spoken naturally is essential for building confidence in speaking and comprehension, especially for languages with unfamiliar sounds.

MULTIPLE LANGUAGES AVAILABLE

Influent supports a wide range of foreign languages, making it a versatile language learning game for multilingual learners. Players who are interested in more than one language can purchase additional DLC packs and then switch languages at any time, allowing them to study more than one language or compare vocabulary across languages. This makes Influent useful for:
  • Students studying foreign languages
  • Travelers preparing for real world situations
  • Polyglots learning multiple languages
  • Gamers looking for an educational game with real life value

LEARN AT YOUR OWN PACE

Influent is designed to be flexible and stress free. There are no forced lessons, no daily streaks, and no penalties for taking breaks. Players choose what to learn and when to learn it. This makes Influent suitable both as a primary vocabulary learning tool and as a supplement to traditional language study methods.

A LANGUAGE LEARNING GAME FOR GAMERS AND LEARNERS

If you are looking for a language learning game on Steam, a vocabulary learning game with native audio, or an educational game for learning foreign languages, Influent offers a unique alternative to traditional study tools. By combining interactive 3D environments with authentic pronunciation and player driven learning, Influent helps make language learning more engaging, approachable, and most importantly, fun!“By immersing the player in the target language, Influent closely models the way we naturally learn our native language. I suggest giving Influent a try.” -Steve Hammond, Somnambulant-Gamer

A BRIEF HISTORY

Influent is a Language Learning Game focusing primarily on vocabulary acquisition and pronunciation. It was initially developed in Japan at the University of Tsukuba's Entertainment Computing Laboratory under the Monbukagakusho Government Research Scholarship. After the research term ended, further funding from a successful Kickstarter Campaign allowed for the completion of the game. Two research papers on the ideas surrounding the game and its applications was published by the Springer and the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ).Influent: Language Learning Redefined.

Bugs and issues found so far in barely 2h: -pronouns don't have audio (Italian and French) -clipping in text (German) -lack of plural in some languages (Italian and French) All of these are easy to find and fix, I guess 12 years wasn't nearly enough. Would have been cherry on the cake if the game was still classed as "early release" but I guess there was no such option then.

(Danish-learning version, bought during 50%-off sale) I'm a little disappointed that I missed the chance for a story mode. If the developer can arrange the translators/writers, I think revisiting the idea of a story mode would be an excellent way to introduce basic grammar by requiring the player to translate NPC dialogue, signs, and in-game letters and other texts in order for the main character to learn the information they need to progress the plot (Chants of Senaar did this well, I thought; I'd love to see something similar for real-world languages). It could be released as a paid DLC to keep it fun for players who enjoy the game as-is, but offer an option for story-loving players like myself. On to the game itself: it is essentially a flashcard game but in a more engaging format. It is pretty good for what it is and I strongly like the commitment to not using AI, but there are some things that would have made it more enjoyable for me: - Adjustable camera speed. As a player who struggles with fine motor control and uses a trackpad, I would have enjoyed the game more if I could slow the camera speed a bit; - All vocabulary unlocking at the same time. Especially with above-men…

This language learning game is incredibly useful in learning and revising vocabulary. When I first got this game I was early in my language learning journey and struggled a little, I felt I couldn't get anything right, however on pausing and learning from textbooks I recognised words I learnt from playing this game so the struggle wasn't for nothing. I have recently returned and I have progressed further than I realised as I am finding it easy to recognise a chunk of words in the game (adjectives, verbs, nouns) both in the reading and listening challenges with high pass rate but also have tons of words I haven't yet come across. There are a few updates I believe would be beneficial: The first would be increasing the speed of the reverse vocal star challenge; when I recognise it is not the answer I need I go to the next diamond but I can't hear it until the previous one has finished playing, which makes that star challenge slow to complete in comparison to the others. I realise this may be language specific, in German the vocal speaks both the singular and plural of the noun you're learning, for example, so not everyone may experience this. It would be helpful if the audio play…

(game not completed and dropped at 1.1 hours at time of review, part of my review all my games effort) (short version) Influent will not teach you a language, it will teach you 400 words of a language. This might be useful for generalized language familiarization but there are games that work better. I would not recommend this game for Japanese (the language I took) as an extensive understanding of Hirigana/Katakana is needed to understand Japanese. $10 is a good price for this game I only recommend it based on the price. Better games are "my language coach" (Nintendo ds) and "Wagotabi".

I've already learned more words thanks to this game than any other method I've tried, including books, online classes, other mobile apps, etc. Thank you for creating this!!!
