About -KLAUS-

✦ AI summary

-KLAUS- is a 2D puzzle platformer where you guide an amnesiac character and his volatile companion through a mysterious basement while uncovering a self-aware, emotionally engaging story that breaks the fourth wall and unfolds seamlessly during gameplay. The game stands out with its dual-character cooperative mechanics, memory-based levels with unique rules, and a narrative where Klaus actively questions your presence and refuses to simply obey your commands.

Klaus is a 2D puzzle platformer with a self-aware narrative. Its design takes inspiration from classics games combined with a tense and emotionally engaging story.

“I DON’T KNOW WHO I AM”

Klaus discovers his identity while trying to escape from a mysterious basement. Through his journey he’ll discover who he is, what "Klaus" means, and how he ended up there. While jumping spikes, hacking computers and avoiding danger, Klaus seamlessly interjects with key elements of his story, which develops naturally while you play.

4TH WALL BREAKING MOMENTS

In KLAUS, you’re not playing as the title character; rather, you’re his companion. Klaus acknowledges your presence and wonders aloud about his escape and how he found himself trapped in the first place. His personality can be volatile in vulnerable moments because Klaus has his own agenda. Oh, and Klaus might not always want to do what you want. After all, who wants to die due to someone else's mistakes?

K1, THE FRIENDLY BRUTE

During your journey, a "friendly" guy called K1 might join you on your journey. K1 is a brawler, at least in part, and with his destructive prowess he’s able to smash obstacles and do Shoryukens without breaking a sweat. Klaus and K1 can be controlled separately or cooperately to solve puzzles, although sometimes they’ll be split apart. Each character, of course, has his own motives.

REMEMBER THE PAST

Throughout the game Klaus will remember his past through interactive memories. Each memory is playable in a unique way with different mechanics than other sections of the game. Just like in real life, the dreamy worlds of the memories don’t follow the same rules of the rest of the game.

FEATURING

  • 6 worlds, 34 levels, 100+ rooms, 3 Bosses.
  • Critically-praised non interruptive narrative. The story unfolds while you play.
  • Two playable characters with unique skill sets and cooperative gameplay.
  • 4th wall breaking moments in gameplay and narrative.
  • Hidden collectible levels add even more depth to an already emotional story.
  • Speedrun mode unlockable after finishing the main story.
  • 2 Endings.

At the start, it seems like an original and well-designed game, with a semi-fresh approach to precision platformer genre. But check out the achievements page: not more than 20% of the players got to the fourth chapter, even less got to the finish. Why is that? There are multiple problems that lead to that. First of all, novelty of design quickly vanishes. Chapters differ in color and some small sprites, but for player they almost look the same. What worse, the gameplay is also the same, with the addition of some small gimmick in each chapter; and these gimmicks are pretty basic, such as wind, lasers and shooting enemies. An interesting idea is the design of the narration that is literally the text that appears inside the levels alongside your movement. There are two problems with it. First, it looks silly as long as you backtrack or respawn (which you'll do hundreds of times). Second, it is nearly impossible to read after the second chapter, because gameplay becomes hard and quick enough that you just don't have any spare attention. Oh, the gameplay. It is really constructed of just a couple of elements: Klaus "hacks" the consoles and K1 "crashes" them. Klaus jumps and is small…

Checked out this game on a whim after a friend recommended it, saying no one had ever heard of it. It genuinely shocked me with how it time and time again blew me away with new and innovative mechanics and the fascinating story it told. God I also wish this game was more popular now lol

Discovered this thanks to the youtube series called Steam Sequence, I am glad I gave it a go! Been a while since I've done a sidescroller, and the artwork and animation of this was beautiful. The writing and story were very good, and its a nice little game to pick up if you have a free weekend to yourself. They do some really interesting this with the controls and such during certain parts that are quite unique, if a bit to handle that required some rebinding of keys on my end. I used K&M and while it was tricky during those sections I did manage, it does say controller is recommended and I would have to agree. A couple of notes though, there are quite a few moments lot of flashing lights. I'm not even photosensitive and it was almost too intense for me during those moments. And while its easy to fix, it is also very easy to softlock the final boss so if you all of a sudden find yourself stuck there don't worry.

A lot of fun puzzle and precision platforming with a nice minimalist aesthetic. The story has a nice build to it as well.

I played through -KLAUS- until somewhere near the end of the game that I wanna quit. I got fed up with the clunky controls on the keyboard and the physics are hard to work with. I like the aesthetic of the game and the story is simple. Im gonna play it again once I bought a controller in the future. Maybe its more fun with a controller.

Super Meat Boy with a dash of The Stanley Parable existentialism. I enjoyed my time with this game, although every time I got a hidden memory piece I had a hard time not yelling out "WARP ZONE!!!" Fully Steam Deck compatible without any issues. The control scheme is very complex and uses many inputs, so not for those with dexterity limitations. There is a bug in the final boss where the right terminal status is not reset after dying. As a result, you can get stuck in the boss battle and not even realize anything is wrong until you've gone through several cycles of boss attacks without an opportunity to counter-attack. When this happens you need to restart the chapter or section and the flag will be reset.
