Creepy Tale

It's decent but nothing special

Recommended. A wordless picture-book puzzler in a grim fairy-tale forest where a brother's rescue is taught entirely through imagery, dream vignettes and trial-and-error, in the Limbo register with cuter teeth. The picture logic clicks together despite reading like nonsense, the witch's cottage delivers genuine jump-scares, highlights (trapping a monster with a mushroom, poisoning via cauldron, a dream-catcher flute) feel invented rather than echoed, and frequent checkpoints keep the deaths painless. Roughly one hour, and the length is exactly right. The colour-mixing vial finale is solved by brute force rather than understanding, the soundtrack is entirely absent (ambient forest sound only), 1080p is blocked, and the controller does not work. A tiny gem that gets out before it wears thin, and the founding statement of a series worth following.

I had a lot of eagerness to play this game. The style is awesome, the atmosphere is creepy. The controls are wonky. The puzzles are so repetitive, boring, and a lot of button mashing until you hope you got it right. Very arbitrary. Could have been great, got ruined by boring gameplay.

The puzzles are sometimes a little weird but it's okay.

It's the experience from the game that counts the most, and the whole series (I've played 1,2 and 3 so far) has satisfied me in full. Catching story, beatiful drawings, good and interesting puzzles, invigorating action parts. I enjoyed the play from the beginning till the end, and I'm looking forward to playing other Creepy Brothers' games I've already bought.
