The Revolution is, unfortunately, a game I just can't recommend.[/b] It has a really nice art style and the beginning is genuinely interesting, but the more I played, the more it felt like the developers tried to put five different games into one instead of focusing on what should have been the core: the trials. ◆ You get political influence over the map of Paris, military battles, dice games, family management and several other mechanics. The problem is that [b]almost none of them feel properly developed.[/b] They're there, they work, and then you move on. Instead of adding depth, they mostly make the game feel unfocused. ༺━━━━━━━━━━✦━━━━━━━━━━༻ ✦ [b]When logic isn't enough[/b] ✦ ◆ Even the trials themselves don't always work as well as they should. There were plenty of situations where I felt I had reached a perfectly logical conclusion, only to find out that it didn't match the answer the game expected. We. The Revolution was a pleasant surprise for me. This is not usually the kind of game I play, and I had never played games like Papers, Please, so I can't really compare it to others in the genre. But the concept immediately caught my attention, and I have to say that I found it genuinely original and interesting. The atmosphere is great. The French Revolution setting works really well, and I enjoyed the feeling of being caught in political schemes and power struggles, constantly having to deal with different factions and their interests. The trials are probably the strongest part of the game, especially at the beginning. Reading the cases, looking for clues, questioning people and trying to understand what really happened was genuinely engaging. I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed it, considering that this is normally not my type of game. The story is also good, with some interesting twists and developments. As for the art direction, though, I personally wasn't a big fan of it. The low-poly, mosaic-like visual style just isn't really to my taste. Yeah, I liked it. Most of the game revolves around going through documents, picking out useful information, and deciding what to do with it. It’s less of a classic detective game and more like examining case files and judging the situation, which actually fits the French Revolution setting quite well. One thing I found a bit frustrating is how easy it can be to choose the wrong response, and there doesn’t seem to be a simple way to take that decision back. Still, if you enjoy historical settings, lots of reading, and games where your choices actually matter, it’s definitely worth trying.

The French Revolution setting is what got me interested in the first place. The game is mostly about making choices, trying to keep different groups happy, and sometimes just trying to survive the consequences of your own decisions. Later on there is more politics, plotting and other stuff to deal with, so it doesn’t feel like you’re only sitting in a courtroom all the time. It can be a little messy and unpredictable, but overall I had a good time with it.
