Probably not. This was built for eSports anyways and largely fell flat on that bet, mostly because of how it was handled by SEGA. Due to this, it was largely left abandoned as a side game for a spinoff franchise (Puyo Puyo) to a mostly forgotten original series (Madou Monogatari). Even when it was new, I wasn't getting bites years ago for random matches and I'm sure it's not much better half a decade or more later. I'll defend the Puyo franchise to my dying breath while certainly not being the best at it. That said, you're much better off searching for Puyo Puyo Tetris in any of their releases than you are with this one due to the lack of overall features and player base in comparison to this one if you're looking for something modern day, especially if you know little of the franchise. To think this is satisfactory in comparison to what is out there now is wrong to assume or to recommend, personally. The argument can be made that this is the cheapest way to get into Puyo with an online scene in modern times. That is also wrong - Fightcade exists for zero money and those that wish not to run the emulation method are welcome to grab Puyo Puyo Vs. for the same costless price…

I'm a huge fan of Puyo Puyo. I knew what I was getting into buying this game (I mostly bought it to see the unique characters and officially play the Fever ruleset on PC with friends), but I'm still not fully satisfied with the options available. I wish I could give a mixed review. - This is a bare-bones Puyo game, trimmed down to the gameplay and nothing else. If you're looking for that, great! If you want to experience a story, try out either of the Puyo Puyo Tetris games. Champions is cheap because it's JUST the game. - Oddly enough, I do like that they toned down the visuals in some ways while playing them up in others for the sake of spectating. This game was definitely made to be watched. It's fun! At the start of matches, fullbody portraits of participating characters appear on the screen dramatically. Chain animations don't exist, but the portraits reappear from time to time. It's presumably for the sake of maintaining the focus on actual gameplay rather than flashiness. - Going back to the topic of chains, I wish they had an option to change chain line types.
