Yaoling: Mythical Journey

[b]Overall Game Rating: 7.5/10[/b] A very beautifully designed game with a very strong, distinct art direction and a very calming atmosphere to it. [hr][/hr] [b]Gameplay: 7/10[/b] It doesn't do anything particularly innovative with the autobattling system, but it delivers on a sense of customization through your companions (the yaolings). You can intervene through spells that can feel...mixed on how effective they actually are. Most of your labor is done prior to the fight. The game has two distinct game modes: one that plays like a standard creature-collection world exploration where you find and catch your yaolings and challenge powerful bosses, and then one that plays with the same battle format but is more comparable to a roguelite. Both are very good, and feels a bit like you got two games in one. One note to those going in, though, the game will introduce the tool for you to breed and minmax your yaolings about halfway through. Do not fall into the trap of trying to minmax. The breeding mechanic operates in real time and you will suck the fun out of your experience waiting around for eggs. [h2]⭐⭐🔵🔵🔵 2/5: Cute, but too much RNG[/h2] It's a cute auto-battler with the usual creature collection mechanics that most people are already familiar with. Beyond that, there's not much. It's not doing a lot in terms of story or gameplay, you just capture things with higher stats and pray to RNG that the auto-battler part actually plays out in your favor. Sometimes it doesn't, overwhelmingly so, and other times it is overwhelmingly in your favor. Sadly can't really recommend it as it's got nothing that draws me to it. Will complete it eventually when I feel bored enough.

I've had fun. Lots of creatures to collect. Though most become human-like evantually, if that bothers you. World is way too big, with areas that you don't really need to explore. Also feels like theres more content in the beginning and then it thins out. The ending, or lack off is a big problem, after the final battle the game is just over. No credits, no epilogue, no idea what happened with the damsel in distress. Honestly for me the game was carried hard by the artwork, and the large number of creatures that can evolve (my favorite part in this type of game).

I like this one the more I play it. It is pokemon meets auto battler. Combat is quick, and pacing has been decent. Has a lot (a lot) of little things to do, quests, bosses, crafting, breeding, gathering, etc, all of which I think is again quick enough that it doesn't get in the way. There is a lot of width to what is available. Controls with a controller are not great, keyboard and mouse way better. The auto battler portion of this could use more party based synergy, and I would still like more ways to transfer traits. Would be nice to be able to build multiple parties that you could bring with you to lean into specializations. I think maybe halfway through you run into a difficulty option; would have been nice for this to be earlier.

My hours speak for themselves. I really enjoyed the game a lot. I didn't think that the autobattler aspect would be interesting for me but I actually really enjoyed it. I feel like it had more strategy and interesting combination then most games out there. It does get really mean towards the end and you'll need a bit of strategy to win. I played a lot of the game on union but went down to finish the game off. at 90 hours I finally felt like it was time to finish.
